2/23 Concordia Loses Opening
Game of Playoff Series to SJU 4-2.
Concordia could never take the lead, gave up two goals in the third
period and lost the opening game of their MIAC playoffs series to St. John's
4-2. The Johnnies had one-goal leads throughout the first two periods before
breaking the game open in the third with a pair of goals from Joel Starke
and Mike Possin. Brady Burgess (Jr., Moorhead, MN) scored both goals for
the Cobbers.
St. John's (14-10-2) scored the opening goal of the game on Chad Helmer's blast from the point at 13:23 of the first period, and never trailed for the rest of the game.
Concordia (14-10-2) scored the first of their two tying goals five minutes into the second period on Burgess' shot from the top of the left circle. The tie would be shortlived as Kevin Willey put St. John's back on top at 7:26 when he punished Concordia on the power play. Willey took a cross ice pass from Possin and hammered a one-timer past Bryan Howard (Sr., Gold River, CA).
In the third period Concordia scored what looked to be the tying goal at 2:50 when Aaron Marsh (So., Summerland, BC) skated past the Johnnie defense and put the puck past goalie Rick Gregory. The officials ruled that the net had been knocked off the moorings before the puck crossed the goal line. On the ensuing faceoff Concordia exacted justice when Mike Gast (Sr., Fargo, ND) won the draw back to Brady Burgess who snapped home his second goal of the game.
Once again St. John's was quick to answer as Starke intercepted a breakout pass, cut left in front of the goal and slid the puck under Howard. Five minutes later the Johnnies put up an insurmountable lead when Possin took a pass on the outside of the left faceoff circle, and fired a low shot that found the lower right corner of the net.
Concordia oushot St. John's in the game 40-26, but St. John's had the
better of the quality chances. Gregory made 38 saves on the game for the
Johnnies as they take a 1-0 lead in the playoff series. The two teams finish
the series tomorrow night at 7:00. If the St. John's wins or ties the game
they will advance to the MIAC championship series. If Concordia wins the
game, the ice will be resurfaced and the two teams will play a 15
minute mini-game to decide the winner of the series.
