Season Outlook and Notes:
Usually a first-year head coach for a women's hockey team will find
the cupboards bare due to graduation or a committed movement towards establishing
a new program. That will not be the case as Kerry Norman steps up behind
the bench for Concordia in her first season as head coach. Norman will
find that the shelves are fully stocked and that the kitchen is in great
shape.
The reason for Norman to be optimistic going into the season is that she will have a nucleus of players that won a school record 13 games in 2001-02 and made the MIAC playoffs for the first time in school history. Of the 17 players on last year's roster, 13 will be returning for action in 2002-03. Included in those 13 are five players that were named to the all-conference or all-conference honorable mention teams from a year ago. The team will also return all eight of their top scorers from last season and their two-time all-conference goaltender. In addition to the 13 returning players, Norman has added a recruiting class that features 11 new players. The Cobber kitchen is fully loaded and ready to cook during the long winter season of 2002-03.
For the fourth straight season Concordia will have one of the premiere goaltenders in the MIAC. Senior Shyla Wilson (Cohasset, Minn./Grand Rapids HS) returns to give the Cobbers a steadying force between the pipes. Wilson is a two-time, all-MIAC performer who has logged more than 3,100 minutes in goal for Concordia. She has a career save percentage of .921 and is coming off a career-best 2.48 goals against average in 2001-02.
Concordia will again feature a high-octane offense that can put big numbers on the board during any game. The team returns all eight of their top scorers from last season. Leading the offensive attack will be the "Arizona Connection". Katie Jacques (Sr., Tempe, Ariz./Corona Del Sol HS) and Lindsay Kurtis (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz., Paradise Valley HS) have been the top two scorers for Concordia for the past two seasons and have amassed over 167 points during that span. Jacques has been named to the all-conference team twice in her career, and Kurtis garnered the award for the first time last season. Jacques has 101 points in her three-year career at Concordia, while Kurtis has 82 points during her first two seasons. Annie Knierem (Sr., Glasgow, Mont., Glasgow HS) gives the Cobbers a third, potent scoring threat to their attack, having scored at least 17 goals in the past two seasons. Last year she was named to the all-conference honorable mention team. All three players were in the top 15 in the league in scoring.
One of the focal points for Norman will be to shore up the defense. In the past, the Cobbers have struggled to hold upper-tier opponents from pounding the Cobber net with a barrage of shots. A quartet of returning players will help bolster the blueline. Jenei Estrada (Jr., Moreno Valley, Cali., Moreno Valley HS), Charity Hartzell (So., Oceanside, Cali.), Lyndi Bell (So., Victorville, Cali., Victor Valley HS) and Sandra Rydén (Helsingborg, Sweden/Tycho Brahe HS) all have at least one year of experience under their belts which will help them deal with the fast pace of the top teams in the MIAC. The top two players from that corps will be Estrada and Rydén. Last season Estrada was named to the all-conference honorable mention team and was sixth in the league in scoring by a defenseman. Rydén will return for a fifth season and will bring a strong skating presence to the defense. She is in her fifth year for Concordia and her experience and knowledge of the league will help the team avoid the peaks and valleys that go with a young squad. Two newcomers should add depth and youthful exuberance to the group. Samantha Gunning (Fr., Baxter, Minn./Brainerd HS) and Kali Palmer (Fr., North Richland Hills, Tex./Birdville HS) have been impressive in the early weeks of practice.
The schedule for Concordia is a "good news, bad news" scenario. The
good news is that the Cobbers will start out the season with their first
four conference games at home and finish with four of their last six MIAC
games at home. The bad news comes in the form of six tough road games in
the middle of the year. Concordia will play the top three teams in the
league from a year ago - Gustavus, St. Thomas and St. Mary's - all on the
road. If Concordia can survive those six, tough road games and be successful
throughout the rest of the 2002-03 MIAC schedule then Concordia could be
staring at a feast come playoff time.
