Beware the wounded dog, men’s hockey still fighting
The Concordia men’s hockey team feels that they are in contention to make the playoffs after a weekend sweep of the Hamline Pipers. If all cards fall in the right order, the Cobbers could finish as high as second place in the MIAC hockey race. Head Coach Steve Baumgartner feels that his team is right where they should be. “We’re starting to peak at the right time,” Baumgartner said. “We wanted to peak at this time – right at the end of the season.” The Hamline victory came after a one week bye in which the Cobbers had an opportunity to heal from various injuries suffered during the season. “Thank God for the bye week,” Baumgartner said. “[Without it] we might

The Cobbers have to fight their way out. “In a one game playoff I will take us over anybody in the conference,” Baumgartner said. Baumgartner’s pack of wounded dogs will get their chance to make the playoffs this weekend against St. Mary’s. The Friday night match should prove to have a playoff atmosphere and be very exciting to watch. “I think it’s going to be a whale of a game,” Baumgartner said. St. Mary’s team finds itself going in the opposite direction of the Cobbers – something Concordia hopes to capitalize on. “They’re searching for things like we were in the early part of January when we couldn’t beat anybody,” Baumgartner said. “We’ve come out of that, [and] they’re just into it. Hopefully they’ll stay into it for another two days.” Concordia hosts St. Mary’s this weekend at the Moorhead Sports Center

Concordia’s track teams performed well at the Cobber Invitational last Saturday despite the fact that both were missing a few of their top athletes due to illness and injury. Wrestlers pleased with season, look towards next
There have been individual successes this season, but as a team, the Cobber wrestlers have had their ups and downs. While they have showed promise at times, frustration has been apparent at others. Concordia finished with a 5-8 duals record this season. The young team

The Cobber wrestling team started its difficult season in December with

“I think it was hard for us to come together as a team early on, but by the end of the year we felt much more like a team,” Kline said. “We wrestled more as a team. I wish we had more meets this year. We looked better as the season went on.” The team came back to the cold weather after going down to the warm South to compete in the Florida duels during break, finishing with a 1-3 record. “It went really well,” Swartz said. “We got to see some schools we really don’t see a lot of. There were 24 Division III schools competing at the event.” On Jan. 11, Concordia won 27-21 at the Dickinson dual. The Cobbers then
took fifth place at the
Concordia placed third in the MIAC duals on Jan. 26, with a 2-2 record. The Cobbers beat Carleton and St. Olaf, but lost to Augsburg and St. John’s. “I expected that we would finish somewhere in the middle,” Swartz said.

Concordia then headed to Eau Claire, Wisconsin on Feb. 2 for a tournament and finished seventh. Swartz was the only Cobber to win his weight class, which was 133-pounds by a 5-3 decision against Jared Esala from University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Concordia’s final meet in preparation for the MIAC tournament was against Jamestown on Feb. 7. The team lost 28-9. Duppler, Swartz and Kline all had victories by decision in their weight classes, but it wasn’t enough against a strong Jamestown squad. The team will head to Carleton on Feb. 23 for the MIAC tournament, which is also a qualifiers meet for the NCAA Division III tournament held March 1-2. “We have a lot of freshmen,” Kline said. “The older guys gave us a lot of support and helped us out. The seniors made this season fun. It’s too bad they are leaving. The seniors made the freshmen feel welcome. Coming to college is hard and a taking on a sport is tough as a freshman. It is a tough adjustment from high school, but they give us good advice.” The young team looks forward to next season to try to improve on their 5-8 duels record and is hoping that there will be more promise and less frustration than this year. | 2001-02
