2/23 Cobbers Finish Third
at Final MIAC Wrestling Championships.
Concordia used the strength of three runner-up finishes and four third place finishes to claim third place at the final MIAC Wrestling Championship Meet. All seven wrestlers were named all-conference by virtue of their top-three finish. For the team's overall performance, head coach Doug Perry was named the MIAC Coach of the Year. It is the first time in Perry's 11-year tenure that he has received the honor. Once again the team received gritty performances from the two stand-out first year wrestlers. William Duppler (Fr., Valley City, N. Dak.) and Dennis Kline (Fr., Plymouth, Minn.) continued to lead the Cobbers as they placed second in the heavyweight and 197-pound weight classes. Fellow first year grappler Peter Benson finished second in the 174-pound weight class. Unfortunately, neither Duppler nor Kline was chosen as an at-large bid to wrestle in the national tournament. The winners from each weight class automatically get invited to the national tournament. Four other wrestlers, from the five schools that participate in MIAC wrestling, received wildcard bids . Despite having outstanding overall records - Duppler finishes at 27-18 and Kline at 23-16 - the top two Cobber wrestlers were passed over for wrestlers that had records of 22-15, 26-14 and a wrestler that finished third in his weight class. Fellow first year wrestler Peter Benson (Fr., Murdock, Minn.) finished second in the 174-pound weight class. After his breakout performance at the MIAC Duals in January, Benson went 7-5 for the final two months of the season. Aaron Swartz (Sr., Starbuck, Minn.) at 133-pounds, Jason Dubord (Sr., Kindred, N.Dak.) at 157-pounds, Rory Olson (Sr., Wadena, Minn.) at 165-pounds and Ed Oehlers (Fr., North Branch, Minn.) at 184-pounds all wrestled their way to third place finishes. The seven top-three finishes, out of 10 weight classes, is a new school record for top-three finishes at a MIAC Championship Meet. 2/17 Cobbers Prepare for MIAC
Championships.
The team is led by a pair of fantastic first-year wrestlers. William Duppler (Fr., Valley City, N. Dak.) is currently 26-17 as a heavyweight and fellow first-year teammate Dennis Kline (Fr., Plymouth, Minn.) is 22-15, wrestling in the 197-pound weight division. Both wrestlers have broken the school record for most wins in a single season by a first-year wrestler. The old mark was 21 victories set by All-American Nathan Reiff in the 1995-96 season. Duppler has earned a second place finish at the Concordia Invitational and a pair of thirds at the University of Mary Invite and the Dickinson Invite. Kline won the St. Olaf Open, and has a couple of runner-up finishes at the University of Mary Invite and the Concordia Invitational. The other wrestlers in the 20-win quartet are Aaron Swartz (Sr., Starbuck, Minn.) and Ryan Smith (Sr., Brainerd, Minn.). Swartz has compiled a 20-16 record in the 133-pound classification. Swartz captured the 133-pound championship at the UW-Eau Claire Tournament. Smith owns a 22-13 mark, wrestling in the 149-pound weight division. He has posted third place finishes at the St. Olaf Open and the University of Mary Invite. Other wrestlers that should factor into the Cobbers success are Jason Dubord (Sr., Kindred, N.Dak.) and Rory Olson (Sr., Wadena, Minn.) and Peter Benson (Fr., Murdock, Minn.). Dubord wrestled his way to a 3-1 record at the MIAC Duals in January, and helped sparked the Cobbers to a third place finish. Olson has a second place finish at the St. Olaf Open, while Benson put up an impressive 3-1 mark at the MIAC Duals. 2/15 The Concordian, Wrestlers

2/07 Cobbers Get Taken Down
by Jamestown 28-9.
Concordia received stellar individual matches from their top three wrestlers, but was unable to stop a consistent Jamestown wrestling squad and lost 28-9. The Cobbers won three of the ten matches, while the Jimmies won seven, with one by a forfeit. Dennis Kline (Fr., Plymouth, Minn.), William Duppler (Fr., Valley City, N. Dak.) and Aaron Swartz (Sr., Starbuck, Minn.) all posted victories by decision, in their respective weight classes. Duppler won by the largest amount of the three, as he downed Jamestown heavyweight Joe Vincent by a score of 6-0. Kline beat Brian Sorum 5-2 in the 197-pound weight class, and Swartz doubled up John Motta 10-5 in the 133-pound match. Swartz entered the match fresh off his championship at the UW-Eau Claire Invite and continued his hot streak. The victory ups his season win total to 20, and allows him to become the fourth Cobber to reach that milestone for the year. It is the first time since the late 1970's that Concordia has pushed four wrestlers over the 20-win mark. Duppler leads the team with 25 victories. Jamestown started the dual meet by winning the first two matches before Duppler and Kline evened the score at 6-6. The Jimmies received a forfeit at the 125-pound weight class, and then Swartz won his match to push the Cobbers to within three at 12-9. After that match it was all Jamestown, as they won the remaining four matches. The two biggest victories were fashioned by Eric Grund who pinned Concordia's Bryce Swenson (Fr., Lowry, Minn.) at 3:55 at 141 pounds, and then JayMe DePee, who scored a major decision over Jason Dubord (Sr., Kindred, N.Dak.) at 157 pounds. The loss drops Concordia's dual record to 5-8 on the year, while the Jimmies improve to 7-6. The Cobbers will head to Northfield, Minn. on Saturday to compete in the Carleton Invite. Jamestown will travel to their regional tournament in Dickinson, N.Dak. on Sunday. 2/02 Cobbers Finish Seventh at UW-Eau Claire Invitational.
