5/3 Kerry Norman Named Head Women's Hockey Coach.

Kerry Norman was named the new head women's hockey coach at Concordia. She becomes the third coach in the program's history.

MOORHEAD -- Concordia-Moorhead College athletic director Dr. Armin Pipho announced today that Kerry Norman has been named the new head women's ice hockey coach at Concordia College. Norman is currently the head girls' varsity coach at Northfield Mount Hermon School in western Massachusetts.

A native of Cortland, N.Y., Norman has coached at Northfield Mount Hermon since 1998. She earned her undergraduate and master's degree in Counseling and Human Development from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. As a player at St. Lawrence - an NCAA Division I school - Norman was a four year letter-winner and was on the Dean's list, while also lettering in field hockey and lacrosse. After college Norman went on to play for the Brattleboro women's senior hockey team in Brattleboro, Ver.

3/05 Five Cobber Players and Coach Earn MIAC Postseason Honors.

Five players and head coach Arnie Caplan earned MIAC postseason honors. 

Juniors Katie Jacques (Tempe, Ariz.) and Shyla Wilson (Cohasset, Minn.) were repeat selections on the all-conference team, and sophomore Lindsay Kurtis (So., Phoenix, Ariz.) earned the award for the first time in her career. Jenei Estrada (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and Annie Knierem (Jr., Glasgow, Mont.) were named to the MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention Team. Kaplan, in his initial season, was named MIAC Co-Coach of the Year.

Jacques led the team in scoring with 24 goals and 21 assists. It is her highest point total in her three-year career as a Cobber. Jacques led the league in game-winning goals with eight. She also finished third in the MIAC in points (35) and goals (20), and fourth in assists (15).

Wilson was the backbone of the Cobber defense. She finished the season with a school-record 12 wins. Her ten wins in conference play also sets a school record. She finished the season with a goals against average of 2.48 - her lowest as a Cobber - and a save percentage of .921. She eclipsed the 1000 minutes of playing time plateau for the second time in her career.

Kurtis tied for the team lead in assists with 19. She finished the season with 33 total points. She now has 84 points in her first two years at Concordia. Kurtis finished second in the MIAC in assists, with 17. She was also seventh in overall scoring with 27 points and 12th in goals scored (10).

Knierem finished the year with 17 goals and 11 assists. She was third on the team in scoring. Her 22 league points placed her 13th on the scoring list. She also finished seventh in goals and sixth in power play goals. She had three game-winning goals, including the deciding tally in Concordia's first-ever playoff win over St. Ben's.

For Caplan, the award caps a season that saw him guide the Cobbers to a school-record 13 wins. The team also finished the season fourth in the MIAC, the highest finish ever for a Concordia women's hockey team. The final record of 13-8-1 also sets the record for fewest losses in a season by a Cobber women's team.

2/02 Cobbers Clinch MIAC Playoff Spot.
By virtue of St. Ben's 5-1 victory over St. Kate's on Saturday, the Cobbers have clinched a spot in the five-team MIAC playoff tournament. It will be the first time that Concordia has ever participated in a postseason tournament. The highest previous finish for the Cobbers came last season when the team placed sixth in the league with a 9-9 record.

Currently, Concordia is in a tie for second place in the MIAC with an 11-4-1 record - they are 12-4-1 overall. The highest Concordia could finish would be second place, while the lowest they could drop to is fifth. The playoff format calls for the fourth place team to host the fifth place team in a midweek game, the week of Feb. 25-March 1. The winner will then play the first place team in a single site semifinal matchup. The second and third place teams will play in the other semifinal. Both the semifinal and final rounds are slated for the Schwann's Ice Rink at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minn. on March 1-2.

1/26 Annie Knierem Named MIAC Co-Player of the Week.

Annie Knierem Jr. Glasgow Mont. Was named the MIAC Co-Player of the Week for her two game-winning goals against Augsburg.

Concordia College junior center Annie Knierem (Jr., Glasgow, Mont.) was named the MIAC Co-Player of the Week. 

Knierem had two goals and two assists in Concordia's two-game sweep at Augsburg. Both goals scored were game-winning goals. Knierem's goal on Saturday came in sudden-death overtime to cap a 4-3 Cobber comeback. Friday night she scored the second goal in Concordia's 6-1 win. In the past five games Knierem has totaled six goals and four assists. She has helped the team win four times on the road, and hold down second place in the conference. Concordia is currently 11-2-1 in the MIAC and 12-2-1 overall.

Knierem shares the award with Susan Engel (Roseville, Minnesota) from the College of Saint Benedict. Engel scored four goals and added one assist
in two games, to help St. Ben's claim an important MIAC series sweep over St. Olaf by the scores of 6-1 and 3-1.

12/04 Shyla Wilson Named USCHO Defensive Player of the Week.
Concordia junior goaltender Shyla Wilson (Cohasset, Minn.) has been named the United States College Hockey Online (USCHO) national defensive player of the week. It is the first national honor ever awarded to a Concordia women's player. 

Concordia swept a pair of games from St. Olaf and in the process moved into a first place tie with Gustavus in the MIAC standings. Wilson made 20 saves in a 4-0 win on Friday night and then made 19 saves in a 4-1 win on Saturday over the Oles. 

Concordia is now 4-0 in the MIAC standings and remains unbeaten on the season at 5-0. They are currently receiving votes in the USCHO.com Poll.

11/19 Katie Jacques Named MIAC Player of the Week.
Concordia junior Katie Jacques (Tempe, Ariz.) has been named MIAC Player of the Week. Jacques tallied five goals and two assists in Concordia's two-game sweep over Bethel this weekend. Jacques scored both game-winning goals and was a part of seven of Concordia's nine goals on the weekend. In Friday's 5-1 victory, Jacques scored three goals and had an assist.

Her three consecutive goals in the second and third periods proved to be the game breaker after the scored was tied 1-1. In Saturday's game, Jacques scored two goals and had an assist. She scored all her points with the game in the balance, as she netted the Cobbers' first and third goals, and assisted on the second. For the weekend Jacques was a +7 and had 13 shots on goal.

For the first time in school history the Concordia women's hockey team is ranked in the top ten of the nation. In the latest USCHO poll the Cobbers are ranked ninth, capturing 29 points. Two other MIAC teams also appear in the top ten. Gustavus (0-0) is ranked third and St. Mary's (1-1) is fifth. 

Concordia hosts St. Cloud State this weekend in a two-game series on Friday night at 7:00pm and Saturday at 2:00. Since St. Cloud is only a club program, the games will not count against Concordia's overall record. 

11/3 Cobbers Explode Past UW-River Falls 5-1.

2001-02 Women's Hockey Preview.
The Concordia College women's hockey team will have a new look behind the bench this year, but a familiar look on the ice. Arnie Caplan becomes the second coach in school history to lead the women's hockey team, taking over for Deb Lien who resigned last summer. Caplan will enjoy the luxury of having 15 players back from last year's team, three of whom were all-conference players. The team also returns their top seven scoring leaders from last year.

Caplan will be hoping to improve on last season's sixth-place finish in the MIAC. The team finished with a 9-9 record in conference, which is a seven game improvement from their 2-11-1 mark in 1999-00. Last season's dramatic rise to the top of the MIAC also included series splits with three of the four MIAC playoff teams.   With the heart of their roster back in 2001-02 the Cobbers are looking to make a run at the four-team conference playoff, a goal they fell just shy of last season.

In the net Concordia returns All-MIAC goalie Shyla Wilson (Jr., Cohasset, Minn.). Wilson led the league in saves and save percentage last season and kept the Cobbers close in the majority of their games. Wilson's season-ending goals against average of 3.05 is a misleading statistic as she never allowed more than four goals in a game after the opening weekend series to St. Ben's, and was instrumental in Concordia's victories over playoff participants St. Thomas, St. Kate's and St. Mary's.
