Volleyball plays hard, loses weekend matches

The largely inexperienced Cobbers volleyball team put up a good fight
in the matches last weekend against St. Olaf College from Northfield, Minn.
and St. Mary’s University from Winona, Minn.
The Friday, Sept. 21, match against the undefeated St. Olaf Oles saw
the Cobbers go down 3-0 (30-14, 30-18, 30-18). The Oles are ranked 10th
by AVCA Division III Coaches. They improve to 3-0 MIAC and 12-0 overall.
Saturday’s match against the defending MIAC champions was a closer match
but with the same result. The St. Mary’s Cardinals defeated the Cobbers
3-0 (30-18, 30-22, 30-25). The Cardinals are now 3-1 MIAC and 5-7 overall.
Freshmen Kris Sather and Jessica Walden had seven kills and 21 set assists
for the Cobbers in Saturday’s match.
The Cobbers team is made up of all freshmen, but they are overcoming
their inexperience.
“We are starting to mesh together,” Sather said. “Some of us have played
against each other before. We are just getting used to playing with
each other.”
As the season progresses the Cobbers are becoming more of a team, Sather
said. The Cobbers are
now 2-2 MIAC and 4-10 overall.
They host Jamestown College tonight at 5p.m. with the JV playing at
7p.m.

Men’s golf preparing for MIAC - Twin Cities Classic
will judge team standing

The men’s golf team will find out if it is for real or just pretending
this weekend at the Twin Cities
Classic.
Thus said Troy Odegaard, interim head coach, while Peter Hovde
was busy with another
assignment for the college.
Up to this point, Odegaard feels that things are going pretty well for
the team. It also shows in
the scores of the recent University of North Dakota Invitational that
took place last weekend in
which the Cobbers Gold team tied for second with a tournament score
of 599 along with North
Dakota’s number one team.
Other scores were very close behind with North Dakota’s number two team
scoring 600, South
Dakota State, 601, and Bemidji State’s number one team tied Manitoba
with 603.
“The team is doing very well,” Odegaard said. “We basically compete
against Division II
schools. Based on that, we are competing at a very high level.”
At the UND Invitational, senior Mike Hagen, junior Adam Hanson and sophomore
Andrew
Beliveau were top finishers for the Cobbers. Hagen shot a 78 on the
first day of play while Hanson and Beliveau were together with 77. On the
second day scores varied a little more with Hagen shooting a 73, Hanson
a 68 and Beliveau a 76.
“We’ve played pretty well this year,” Hagen said, “but a person can
always second guess
themselves after a game. The next couple of weekends are crucial for
how we do in the future.
A lot of the teams that will be at the Twin Cities Classic will be
going on to the nationals.”
Many of those teams have been challenged by the Cobbers and in some
cases beaten,
Odegaard said. This weekend is just for improvement because the
real goal is the Oct. 5-6
MIAC Championships at the Bunker Hills Golf Course. “We have to finish
in the top two [to go on],” Odegaard said, “and the team believes it can
do it."
This weekend, however, there will be very high level competition. Besides
Concordia, seven
other MIAC teams will be there, and we will be able to find out exactly
where we are at.”
That, as Odegaard so eloquently put it, is where the team finds out
what they are made of.
This weekend and Monday they will play at the Links, the Elk River
and the Midland golf
courses in the Twin Cities at the Twin Cities Classic.
