Football Preview 2001
The biggest change will be on the sidelines where first-year head coach Terry Horan will be the holder of the torch of coaching tradition at Concordia. An honor that was handed to him when long time coach Jim Christopherson retired last year after 32 years at the helm. Horan is only the third coach the school has employed in the past 60 years. Horan faces an uphill task in his first year, as he inherits a team that went 4-6 in 2000 and only has 11 total starters returning from that team. He will have to fill holes in both lines and also the offensive backfield, while trying to bring his own style of coaching to a program that has never had two losing seasons in a row since the late 1940's. The cupboards are not all bare, as the team has several players that filled supporting roles the past few seasons that are waiting to step into a starring position. Among those that are capable of making an impact are four solid lineman. On the offensive line, returning starters Mark Haugen (Sr., Moorhead, Minn.) and Eric Emmerich (Sr., Princeton, Minn.) will offer size at the tackle spots, while defensive tackles Ben Holm (Sr., Gillette, Wyom.) and Derek Flann (Lake Lillian, Minn.) will anchor the defensive front four. Another group of four players will also be the key to the Cobbers success in 2001. Offensively the team is hoping for big years from returning quarterback Jeff Hertel (Sr., Fargo, N. Dak.) and wide receiver Raleigh Schmidt (Sr., Tracy, Minn.). Two other defensive players have the capabiltiy to be standouts, they are Travis Olson (Sr., Hawley, Minn.) who will be switched to linebacker this year and returning cornerback Josh Vickerman (Jr., Alexandria, Minn.). | Click here for a more detailed preview | 8/07 Concordia Announces Football Media Day.
