11/10 Cobbers Race to 10th Place
at Central Region Meet.
Katie Martin (Jr., Bozeman, Mont.) ran a personal record 18:10 for fifth- place at the NCAA Central Region Championships. She earned All-Region for the third consecutive season. Martin's performance earned her a return trip to the NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships. Martin was 71st out of 212 runners at the 2000 NCAA National Cross Country Championships. The Cobbers finished in 10th place at the 25-team regional meet. Wartburg (IA) won the competition followed by the national qualifying teams of Nebraska Wesleyan, Luther, and St. Olaf. Last season Concordia finished in the top five, earning their first ttrip to the national meet in 10 years. This year the Cobbers ran faster than last year's national qualiying team by the average time of 19:24 to 19:28 on similiar courses. Concordia had four runners set personal records and three others nearly set personal records. The other Cobbers to represent the team at the region meet were Lisa Owen (So., Minot, N.Dak.) 40th in a personal record (PR) time of 19:16; Beth Moen (Sr., Andover, Minn.) 50th in 19:29; Liz Sorenson (Jr., Stanley, ND) 68th with a PR time of 19:54; Heather Shulstad (Jr., Fargo, N.Dak.) was 85th in 20:11; and freshmen Jennifer St. John (Fr., Billings, Mont.) and Julie Miller (Fr., Duluth, MN) rounded out the squad in places 88 and 91 with times of 20:15 and 20:17 respectively, both were PR's. The NCAA Division III National Meet will take place November 17th at Augustana College of Rock Island, Illinois. The women's race is scheduled for 11:00am with the men to follow at noon. 10/27 Cobbers Finish 6th at
MIAC Championships.
Martin finished third to receive All-Conference honors for the third straight year. She trailed only individual champion Megan Daymont (Jr., St.Olaf) in 18:28 and defending MIAC Champion and NCAA Division III All-American Kelly Faris (Sr., St. Thomas) who ran a time of 18:35. The Cobber's Beth Moen (Sr., Andover, Minn.), who was an all-conference honorable mention runner in 2000, improved to an all-conference finish, placing 15th with a time of 19:33.4. Lisa Owen (So., Minot, N.Dak.) was designated as all-conference honorable mention for the second consecutive year by her 20th place finish in a time of 19:52.2. Rounding out the top five for Concordia were Heather Shulstad (Jr., Fargo, N.Dak.) in 39th and Jennifer St. John (Fr., Billings, Mont.) who finished 50th in times of 20:18.1 and 20:38.2 respectively. The Cobber runners will compete at the Central Region National Qualifier Meet to be held on Saturday, November 10 at Oakland Hills golf course in Grinnell, Iowa. The women are scheduled to run at 11:00am and the men at noon. The top 4 teams and the top 5 individuals not on those four teams will qualify for the NCAA Division III National Championships. The meet was held at the Ray Richards golf course in Grand Forks. The weather conditions were ideal for the meet and the young Cobbers performed well, finishing fourth despite the absence of their top runner, junior Katie Martin (Bozeman, Mont.). Concordia finished with a team total of 104 points which placed them behind host UND (28 pts.), NDSU (51), and the University of Manitoba (55). In addition to Moen, the top five Cobber runners were Lisa Owen (So., Minot, N.Dak.) who finished 17th with a time of 19:47, Jennifer St. John (Fr., Billings, Mont.) in 20th place at 20:01, Heather Shulstad (Jr., Fargo, N.Dak.) in 27th and Julie Miller (Fr., Duluth, Minn.) in 28th place with times of 20:23 and 20:24 respectively. The next meet for the Cobbers will be September 22nd at 11:00am at the St. Olaf Invitational in Northfield. 8/31 Cobbers Cruise to Opening
