Concordia taken down by Gustavus
by Blair Sander - Sports Editor
The coin toss was about all the Cobbers won in last Saturdays 28-42
loss to the Gusties.
That doesn’t mean that they didn’t play hard, however.
“How we did showed on the scoreboard,” said sophomore Robert Clark (Seeley
Lake, Mont.).
“There were a lot of positives and negatives.”
During a back and forth first quarter, Gustavus shut out Concordia with
two touchdowns.
The start of the second quarter found the Cobbers with the ball in
their own zone. After making
a little headway they were forced to punt and although a short punt
put the Gusties into scoring
range, the Cobbers kept them at bay. Not long after, Concordia woke
up and made the Gusties wish they were dreaming as Clark gained 64 yards
on a punt return before being stopped 20 yards short of the goal line.
Shortly thereafter, before the Gusties could get into position, Clark got
hold of another punt and brought it 67 yards to score a touchdown to put
the Cobbers on the scoreboard.
After a failed extra point attempt and punt to Gustavus, Concordia
waited a few plays to burn
the Gusties with an interception that led to a diving touchdown and
a two point conversion to
bring the score to 14 for both teams. Gustavus made it obvious that
they were not about to take that sort of disrespect lying down as they
came storming up the field amid hard hits to open up the lead they would
hold for the duration of the game. They ended the first half with a 21-14
lead.
Within minutes after the start of the second half, Gustavus was up
on the scoreboard with
another touchdown.
With less than five minutes to go in the third quarter, Concordia sophomore
Chad Worthington
(Bozeman, Mont.) made an interception that allowed the Cobbers to work
their way into
touchdown range and then to score again to bring the score to 21-28
Gustavus. The Gusties made short work of the fourth quarter as they scored
14 more points. Concordia finished up the game as sophomore Ryan Hebrink
(Sacred Heart, Minn.) got a pass in to senior Jeff Hertel (Fargo, ND) for
a 10 yard touchdown completion to bring the end score to 28-42 Gustavus.
The loss to Gustavus puts Concordia 1-2 in MIAC play and 2-2 overall.
“There were chances to score, we just didn’t take advantage [of them].”
Clark said.
This weekend the Cobbers play an away game against Hamline.

Cross-country runners find balance
by Kara Murray - The Concordian
Imagine balancing classes, morning practices, weight lifting, homework,
practices and miles and
miles of running.
Now you know what the Concordia cross-country team spends its fall season
doing, working
hard to build the endurance they need to pull through the season.
“This is the hardest sport I’ve ever played; it takes a lot of balancing,”
Kirk Nelson said. “It is
easy to get frustrated because it takes a lot out of you, but we work
hard.”
The men’s cross-country team is doing well with its young members. At
the Sept. 14 UND
invitational, 10 of Concordia’s runners achieved their personal best
in the 8000-meter race.
Ben Nylander clocked a personal best of 26:54, with Kirk Nelson close
behind at 27:09. Jason
Karls and Jim Monson were next in for the Cobbers with times of 27:27
and 27:26.
“A majority of our guys had their best race,” Nelson said. “That is
usually a sign that the season
is going well.”
The Cobbers faced up to the fierce competition the UND tournament provided.
The team
finished in fourth place with a score of 93 points. Ahead of the Cobbers
were UND (81),
Jamestown (85), and NDSU (19). They will use this to prepare themselves
for the tough MIAC
competition to come.
The Cobbers soon travel to compete in the University of Minnesota invitational
where they will
meet up with other MIAC schools for the first time. “It is usually
a good conference and will be again this year,” Nelson said. “We would
like to make it into the top five.”
The women’s cross-country team is leaving other teams in the dust already
this season.
The Cobbers recently put on the speed to tie St. Thomas for first place
at the St. Olaf
invitational. Concordia featured Katie Martin and Beth Moen in the
top ten.
The Cobbers team score was 63, seven points above host and two time
defending MIAC
champion St. Olaf. “Our main goal for this year is to make it
to nationals,” Lisa Owen said. “St. Thomas and St. Olaf are both tough
teams.”
The Cobbers also had some personal victories in the invitational. Katie
Martin won the individual championship. She ran in at 18:56, placing better
than excellent competitors, including the 2000 NCAA Division III national
fourth place finisher Kelly Faris. Beth Moen featured a ninth place finish
at 19:48. Other top finishers for the Cobbers included Lisa Owen-18th,
Jennifer St. John-20th, and Liz Sorenson-22nd.
“We are a very talented team,” Owens said. “We have a lot of depth,
and [we] bust our butt
everyday.”
Don’t think that just because they run faster does not mean that they
don’t stop to have fun.
Both teams have ways of relaxing and having a good time. The women’s
team travels to Park
Rapids and spends time together, getting to be good friends on and
off the track. The men’s
team has Cobber games each Friday before practice, where they have
fun competitions, like an
egg toss or van push.
“It helps us to relieve some stress,” Nelson said. “Balancing everything
can be tough, but we
are doing good.”
