Cobbers Lose Tough Battle to St. John's 56-54.

Concordia outrebounded and outshot St. John's, but were unable to gain the edge in points, losing 56-54. The Cobbers shot 47.8 percent (22-for-46) to the Johnnies 36.6 (15-for-41) and held the advantage in rebounds 33-29, but St. John's shot 23 more free throws than the Cobbers and held on for the two-point win. The Johnnies were 22-for-35 from the free-throw line compared to 8-for-12 for the Cobbers.
Three Concordia (4-6, 5-10) players scored in double-digits. John Breneman (Jr., Roseville, Minn.) had a team-high 14 points and seven rebounds, to lead the Cobbers for the second consecutive game. Both Mike Syverson (Sr., Twin Valley, Minn.) and Jared Swanson (Jr., Morris, Minn.) finished the game with 10 points. Breneman and Syverson fouled out before the end of the game. Mike Nester's game-high 19 points and eight rebounds paced St. John's (5-4, 7-7).
The teams played a physical, low-scoring first half that ended in a 23-23 deadlock. Neither team could fin a rhythm on offense with Concordia connecting on eight field goals for the first 20 minutes and the Johnnies only draining seven shots.
St. John's finally made a decisive run late in the game. The Johnnies took a 50-40 lead with only less than four minutes to go in the game. Concordia proceeded to outscore St. John's 14-6 down the stretch and had a chance to tie the game in the last seconds. The Cobbers inbounded the ball after a made Kevin Buth free throw with seven seconds to go in the game. The Cobbers raced the length of the court only to misfire on an entry pass and have the ball wind up in possession of a St. John's defender.
Concordia will host Bethel on Wednesday, January 16th at 7:30pm. St.
John's will travel to Winona to take on St. Mary's on Wednesday at 7:30pm.
