Jr. Watkins, Minn. Scored a game-high 20 points and committed only 3 turnovers in Concordia's 73-61 win over Mayville State. |
(Mayville, N.Dak.)-- Concordia first-year head coach Jessica Rahman picked up right where her playing days left off by winning basketball games in a decisive manner. The Cobbers outscored Mayville State 37-28 in the second half en route to their 73-61 opening game victory.
Rahman has now won 14 straight games as a Cobber. She finished he playing career by winning 13 straight on her way to the 1987-88 national championship. In her first win as head coach, she received quality minutes from point guard Mandy Pearson (Jr., Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins HS), who had game-high 20 points, and Debbie Slack (Sr., Evansville, Minn./Evansville HS) who finished with a game-high 18 rebounds.
Pearson was 7-for-14 from the floor and more importantly limited her turnovers to only three. Slack had 10 rebounds in the first half, and finished the game with 10 offensive rebounds and eight defensive rebounds.
The Cobbers pulled away late in the first half and led 36-33 at the break. After halftime, Concordia turned up the defensive pressure and limited the Comets to only 8-for-43 (18.6 pct.) shooting in the final half. Concordia shot a consistent 33 percent from the field in both halves. The Cobbers were 5-for-17 from behind the 3-point line and made 18-of-29 shots from the free throw line. Mayville State held a slight advantage in rebounds. The Comets outrebounded the Cobbers 53-47.
In addition to Pearson's 20 points, Beth Drager (Sr., Wood lake, Minn./Eastview HS) and first-year player Anne Keeley (Grafton, N.Dak./Grafton HS) scored 10 points each to give Concordia three players in double figures. The Cobbers had nine players score at least two points, four of which were first-year players.
Mandey Gillis had a team-high 15 points for the Comets, scoring all of her points from behind the 3-point line. Mallory Brager hauled in 18 rebounds in the losing effort.
Concordia will play at UM-Morris on Tuesday,
November 25 at 7:00pm. There will be no live internet or radio broadcast,
the only game of the year for the Cobbers that will not be aired over the
internet.
