Soren nelson picked up his first double-double of the season in the Cobbers' one-point win over St. John's.

THE SCOOP

Despite being outrebounded 33-24, the Cobbers outscored the Johnnies 40-18 from inside the "paint".

(Collegeville, Minn.)-- Concordia rebounded from a tough loss at the hands of Gustavus on Saturday by slicing and dicing past St. John's for a 69-68 victory. The one-point win moves the Cobbers into sole possesion of third place, as Bethel was upset by St. Mary's and Carleton did not play on Wednesday. 

Concordia is now 9-4 in league play and 12-5 overall. The nine conference wins is the most by a Concordia team since the 2000-01 season when the Cobbers finished 11-9 and lost in the semifinals of the conference tournament. St. John's loses for the sith time in the last seven games and falls to 5-8 in the MIAC and 7-11 overall. 

Soren Nelson (Jr., Twin Valley, Minn./Norman County East HS) paced the Cobbers. The junior post, collected his first double-double of the season. He scored 11 points and hauled in 11 rebounds. Keith Eckhoff (So., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) was the leading scorer for Concordia. He totaled 13 points and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line.  Chris Wermerson (Jr., Brandon, S.Dak./Brandon Valley HS) and Joe Bueckers (Sr., Pine River, Minn./Pine River-Backus HS) were the final members of the Cobbers in double figures. Wermerson finished with 10 points and a team-high five rebounds, and Bueckers contributed 10 points and five assists.

Paul Henrichs did most of the damage for the Johnnies. He recorded game-highs in scoring and rebounding. Henrichs posted 18 points and collected eight rebounds. 

Concordia trailed 27-24 at halftime but shot 68.2%(15-for-22) in the second half to outscore St. John's 45-41 and come away with the one-point win. For the game, the Cobbbers were 25-for-44 (56.8%) from the floor and 17-for-22 (77.3%) from the free throw line. St. John's shot 42.6%(23-for-54) from the floor and 53.3%(8-for-15) from 3-point range. The biggest advantage for Concordia was from underneath the basket. Although the Cobbers were outrebounded 33-24, they outscored the Johnnies 40-18 in points from inside the "paint" area. Concordia also held an eight-point edge in second chance points.

1/24 Cobbers Can't Repeat 2nd Half Magic, Lose 72-54 to League-Leading Gustavus.

(Moorhead, Minn.)-- Concordia ran into an outside-shooting bulldozer and fell for the first time in seven games, losing 72-54 to Gustavus. The Gusties were August-hot from beyond the arc as they shot 52.9%(9-for-17) from 3-point range for the game. The Cobbers tried to pull off a second straight, second half comeback but each time they got to within striking distance, the Gustie outside shooting machine calmly reclaimed a double-digit lead. 

Concordia falls to 8-4 in the MIAC but remains in a three-way tie for third place due to a loss by Bethel and a victory from Carleton. The Cobbers slip to 11-5 overall. Gustavus wins for the seventh straight time and pushes their conference record to 11-1. They are now 13-4 overall. 

Tim Brown was the Gustie with the golden touch. He finished the game by pouring in four, 3-point baskets and ended with a game-high 20 points. Three other Gustie players finished in double digits. Doug Espenson finished with 15 points, while Phil Sowden added 13 and Chris TeBrake chipped in 12. 

Josh Downey (Sr., Bigfork, Mont., Bigfork HS) was the leading scorer for the Cobbers. The junior guard finished with 14 points and was 2-for-5 from beyond the arc. Chris Wermerson (Jr., Brandon, S.Dak./Brandon Valley HS) was the only other Cobbers with more than 10 points. He scored 11 points and finished with a game-high six rebounds. 

Gustavus built a 36-28 halftime lead by shooting 44.4%(12-for-27) from the floor in the first half. More importantly, they shot 50%(6-for-12) from 3-point range as they never trailed throughout the entire 40 minutes of play. Concordia shot 62.5%(10-for-16) from the floor in the opening period but were plagued by 10 turnovers. Gustavus held an 11-1 edge in points off of turnovers in the first half. 

In the second half, Concordia was able to cut down on their turnovers and get more shots, but were only able to hit on 30.4%(7-for-23) from the field. Gustavus turned up the heat and shot 66.7%(14-for-21) from the floor in the final 20 minutes. With the Gustavus shooters draining shots from anywhere on the floor, the Cobbers were unable to cut the lead to under 10 points for the final 17:30 of the game.

Concordia will play a pair of pivotal road games this week. The Cobbers will play at St. John's on Wednesday, January 24 at 7:30pm, and then travel to St. Paul to play Macalester on Saturday, January 31 at 3:00pm. Chris Wermerson scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the 2nd half in Concordia's 68-64 win over St. Olaf.

The Concordia bench outscored their counterparts 19-3 in the 2nd half and 30-11 for the game.

(Northfield, Minn.)-- Concordia shot a red-hot 65.2%(15-for-23) in the second half, erased a 10-point halftime deficit and came away with a hard-fought 68-64 over St. Olaf. The win is the sixth straight for the Cobbers, and sets up a showdown with league-leading Gustavus on Saturday, January 24 at 3:00pm in Memorial Auditorium. 

The six-game winning streak is the longest since the 1995-96 season when the Cobbers rattled off a 10-game unbeaten string and won the MIAC playoff championship. Concordia is now 8-3 in the MIAC and tied for third place with Bethel, who defeated Carleton 72-63 to bump the Knights out of the three-way tie for third. The Cobbers are now 11-4 overall. The last time Concordia was seven games over the .500 mark was also the '95-96 campaign.

Chris Wermerson (Jr., Brandon, S.Dak./Brandon Valley HS) emerged from the pack to lead the Cobbers in the second half. Wermerson scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the final frame. He was 3-for-3 from the floor and 6-for-8 from the free throw line in the deciding 20 minutes. He also hauled down a game-high nine rebounds, missing his first double-double of the season by a single rebound. 

Concordia had three other players score in double figures. Soren Nelson (Jr., Twin Valley, Minn./Norman County East HS) teamed up with Wermerson to create a forceful inside presence  for Concordia. Nelson finished the game with 11 points and three blocks. Head Coach Duane Siverson once again received stellar play from the guard position. Joining Wermerson and Nelson in double digits was the tandem of Josh Downey (Sr., Bigfork, Mont., Bigfork HS) and Keith Eckhoff (So., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS). Both Downey and Eckhoff finished the game with 12 points.

Nate Lund had a game-high 17 points for the Ole's. He missed only one shot from the field (8-for-9) and collected a team-high six rebounds.

One of the keys for the Cobbers was their depth of scoring off the bench. Concordia's bench outscored their counterparts 19-3 in the second half and 30-11 for the game.

Concordia now sets their sights on the Gusties, who downed Augsburg 71-52. Gustavus is currently 10-1 in league play, and like the Cobbers, have won six straight.
