Recap
Friendt Overtakes Sundquist to Make
St. Mary's Multi-Event Capital of the MIAC.
MOORHEAD-- Rob Friendt
from St. Mary's staged a second-day rally, and pulled off the victory over
defending champion Evan Sundquist of St. Olaf in the MIAC heptathlon.
Friendt overcame a 12-point deficit heading into the final three events
and won by 219 points. His total of 4,882 points sets a St. Mary's school
record and is the highest total at the MIAC championship meet for the event
since the men's event was changed for the pentathlon to the heptathlon
last season.
Friendt joins fellow Cardinal
athlete Ashley Dingels as conference multi-event champions. That
feat marks the second straight season that both the pentathlon and heptathlon
champions have come from the same school. Last year, Sundquist won the
heptathlon and Ole women's athlete Becky Peterson won the pentathlon.
Friendt started the second
day by finishing second in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.09. That
time netted him his highest point total of the day. He scored 826 points
in the first race, and went from trailing Sundquist by 12 points to leading
by a comfortable 140 points. He then came back with 769 points in the pole
vault as he won the event with a height of 14-10.25.
After the second of three
events in the final day, he had a 339-point lead and needed to merely finish
the 1,000 meters without falling down or being disqualified. Friendt paced
himself to a 3:11.19 to finish ninth and came away with the overall victory.
Sundquist finished the event
with 4,662 points, which is 81 points better than the score he won the
event with last year.
Matt Mogensen of St.
John's overtook Sundquist for second place after the first two events of
the day but then slipped down a spot after the final event. Mogensen won
the 55-meter hurdles and finished second in the pole vault, and with one
event remaining he had a 12-point cushio foe second place. He then finished
six seconds behind Sunduist in the 1,000 meters and dropped into third
place. His final total of 4,601 points set a new St. John's heptathlon
record.

Men's Heptathlon
Day 1 Recap
Sundquist and Friendt Wage Track Battle
in MIAC Heptathlon.
- Defending champion Sundquist
leads after day one, Friendt wins three events and is only 12 points behind.
MOORHEAD-- St. Olaf senior
standout Evan Sundquist placed himself in position to capture his
second consecutive conference heptathlon title. Sundquist battled to a
final total of 2,739 points after day one at the MIAC heptathlon held at
Concordia. His lead is only 12 points as Rob Friendt from St. Mary's,
who won three of the four events and continues to hang with the defending
champion.
Sundquist, who amassed 4,581
points in winning the crown last season, did not place lower than second
place in any of the first four events. He won the shot put with a toss
of 40-10.25 and finished second in the 55 meters (6.85), long jump (20-10.75)
and high jump (6-0.75). His highest point total of the first day came in
the first event, when he scored 767 points in the 55-meter dash. Sundquist
scored at least 630 points in all four event in the first day of competition.
Friendt started the heptathlon
off with a bang. He scorched the track in the 55 meters with a time of
6.68. That gave him 829 points to lead off the competition, and was the
single highest point total by any competitor in any event in the first
day. That time is a personal best for Friendt this season and ties the
St. Mary's school record. Friendt backed up his opening event performance
by also winning the long jump. After two events, he had a total of 1,577
points and was 142 points clear of Sundquist. His Waterloo came in the
shot put where he finished ninth and lost 207 points to Sundquist. His
total of 427 points in the event was his lowest single event total of the
day.
Friendt responded by winning
the final event of the first day. His height of 6-3.25 was over two inches
better than runner-up Sundquist and he regained 53 of the 207 points he
lost in the shot put.
Matt Mogensen of St.
John's is the only other athlete in the field that has over 2,500 points.
The sophomore from St. Peter is in third place after day 1 with 2,509 points.
The field of 12 competitors
will finish the event on Friday, March 4 starting at 9:30am. They will
run the 55-meter hurdles followed by the pole vault at 11:00am and then
end with the 1,000 meters at 3:30pm.
The rest of the MIAC Indoor
Track and Field Championship Meet will start on Friday, March 4 at 3:00pm
and continue through Saturday, March 5.
