The Concordia baseball team extended their 1983 season an extra three games when they were invited to participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Midwest Regional Baseball Tournament held May 25-26 at Oshkosh, Wis.
Entering the tournament with a 12-6 conference record and 19-12 overall, the Cobbers were stopped with two losses in three games during the double elimination playoff.
In the tournament the Cobbers lost their opener 8-3 to the Otterbein (Ohio) College team, who hit five home runs during the game, including three in the first inning. Otterbein went on to claim the tournament title.
Solid pitching from Howard Berglund, a junior from Carrington, N.D., and heavy hitting by the team gave the Cobbers a 13-7 win over Washington University, St. Louis Mo., to put Concordia at 1-1 in the tournament.
The University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh eliminated Concordia from the tournament 5-4 in the third game.
For the year pitcher Stephen Anderson ('83), Melrose Minn., and Mark Nelson a junior from Alexandria Minn., were named the most valuable players of the team Anderson was 7-2 on the season, which was the most wins by a Concordia pitcher in one season.
