1998 Preview: Jim Cella's 1998 Concordia men's soccer team will be looking to continue the success that it has had over past three seasons. The Cobbers have had three straight "Top Two" MIAC finishes, and have won the MIAC in two of those three years. Concordia's record during that span is an impressive 24-6 in the MIAC and 37-12-2 overall. Concordia was 12-5 overall in 1997 , 7-3 and tied for second in the MIAC. Concordia will be led by two returning all-conference players, junior forward Josh Spaulding from Minnetonka and junior defender Eric Singer from Plymouth. The Cobbers will be without there top two point leaders from 1997, MIAC MVP Todd Hashbarger who led the team in scoring and Jim Stone who finished second both of whom were lost to graduation. Spaulding will be counted on to lead the team in offense, an offense that has scored at least 20 goals in each of the past 3 MIAC seasons. Helping lead the goal scoring for 1998 will be junior co-saptains Micah Benson , from Moorhead and Todd Stebleton from Burnsville. On defense the Cobbers will return several key players. Besides Singer, the team will be looking for stellar play from senior goaltender Paul Toso , from Shoreview, and defensive standout Dustin Holt, a senior co-captain from St. Cloud. Overall Concordia returns 27 players from last year's second place MIACfinish, and that includes 9 starters. Concordia opens play Sept. 5 at 2:00 against Brian Cliff at the St. John's Tournament.
