Cobbers finish second in national hockey tourney

Concordia's hockey team finished second in post-season play at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national tournament and had a 17-13 season won-lost record. The Cohhers lost to Bemidji (Minn.) State University. the NAIA's number one-ranked team, in the championship game.

The Cobbers played shorthanded at the national tourney as a result of disciplinary action imposed by college officials against the coach and several key players. The suspensions resulted from an altercation durlng the final regular season game at Augsburg College.

With senior tri-captain Ray Weisgarber out with an injury, the Cobbers were a definite underdog in the tournament. Concordia surprised most hockey experts by defeating Augsburg, a team that had beaten them twice, in the first round and Duluth's St. Scholastica in the semifinals. The team was guided during the tournament by assistant coach Greg Simoneau.

Senior Jeff  Frieder set a school record with 26 goals this season. Second place John Villalta had 11 goals.
