Hockey Cobbers share conference
crown
Al Rice's 1980-81 Concordia hockey team ended the season as MIAC co-champions
with Augsburg, with identical 12-4 records. Their overall season
record was 21-9-1 - the best record in the history of the school.
The Cobber team anticipated growing pains last season with 10 freshmen
on the roster. But they easily advanced to the national tournament on the
basis of their winning season and a two-game, total-goals playoff victory
over St. Cloud State.
Concordia's season could be characterized by balanced scoring and persistence.
The Cobbers made their first appearance in the NCAA Division II tourney
in Andover, Mass., but failed to capture a title. "It was, no doubt, an
educational trip for us," Rice said. "By advancing as far as we did, we
extended our season by four weeks and four games. That will pay off next
year."
High scorers this season include Tom Bruce, St. Cloud, Minn; Tom Samuelson,
Duluth, Minn.; Jeff Goos, Andy Odegaard, Lonnie Vatnsdal and Brian Vatnsdal,
all from Roseau, Minn.; Brad Howard and Steve Baumgartner, both from Regina,
Sask.; Paul Bjorklund, Fergus Falls, Minn.; and Mark Jordahl, Austin, Minn.
Three Cobber skaters were named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference hockey team. They were defenseman Kevin Johnson, International
Falls, Minn., forward Steve Baumgartner and forward Lonnie Vatnsdal.
Jeff Goos, Mark Hedstrom, Fergus Falls, Minn., and Tom Samuelson were
given honorable mention status.
