The Cobbers are coming off a 5-19 season. The good news is that nine players return from last year's team, seven of whom have substantial experience. The bad news is that head coach Duane Siverson is without three of the top four players from last year's squad.
Swing man Joe Ford (6-3 senior) returns after averaging 10.7 points per game last year and leading the team from the perimeter, connecting on 54 of 140 from 3 point range (39%). But gone up front are All-MIAC forward Brian Kesselring (15.2 ppg, 4.5 rpg), swing man Kermit Cooper (12.8 ppg, 7.1 rpg) and center/forward Mike Wrobel (10.0 ppg, 6.5 rpg).
The 1999-2000 Cobbers will be older, wiser and smaller. The nine returning players have 20 years of varsity experience between them. Whether that can make up for a serious lack of size is a big question.
Inside
Nate Malchow, a 6-8 senior post from
Aberdeen, SD, (2.5 ppg, 1.7 rpg), is the leader of this team. He'll share
inside duties with 6-7 sophomore Jeff
Ubben (Moorhead). Ubben averaged 4.7 ppg playing just 10 minutes
per game last year. He will clearly be the main inside scoring threat.
The forwards
Siverson will try to get the 6-3
Ford
open for shots on the outside but will also use him to help Ubben
and Malchow defend inside. Where the
rest of the help comes from up front is yet to be determined. Mike
Syverson (So., 6-3, Twin Valley, MN, Norman Co. East HS) is the only
front court player returning from last year's JV.)
The Guards
Mark Tuchscherer (So.
6-0, Brainerd) earned starting spot at two guard late in '98-99 as a freshman
and averaged 4.5 ppg, 1.3 rpg. Greg North
(Sr., 6-2, Mt. Pleasant, Australia, Fertile-Beltrami HS) looks improved
enough to push Tuchscherer for time. Long range bomber Garrett
Greterman (6-3, Fargo, ND, North HS) is also in the mix among returners
at the two guard. In addition, Siverson is hoping for back court
help from Jon Hager (Jr.,
6-2, Grand Forks, ND, Central HS). Hager played at Lake Region JC in Devils
Lake last year.
Nick Killoran (Jr., 6-1, Buffalo, ND, Maple Valley HS, 2.5 ppg, 2.2 apg) is the incumbent starter at the point. But not by much. Tino Garcia (So., 6-2, Moorhead) played a lot at the point last year, as did Matt Anderson (Sr., 5-11, Starbuck, Minnewaska HS, 4.3 ppg, 1 apg).
This returning crowd at the guard spot, along with some promising younger guards, may serve Siverson well if he ends up going with a three guard offense.
The Cobbers don't get any time to experiment with cupcakes. They open
at NDSU on Nov. 20 at 7:00 and then host Moorhead State Nov. 23 at 8:00.
