Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID Don Stoner
MINNEAPOLIS (9/25/99) -- The Augsburg College women's hockey team is adept at making history.
Augsburg was the first college/university in Minnesota to institute a women's hockey program at the varsity level in the 1995-96 season. The Auggies claimed a share of the inaugural Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) championship in 1998-99, as the MIAC was the first collegiate conference in the Midwest (and second in the nation) to sponsor a women's hockey championship.
This season, Augsburg's fifth on the varsity level, the Auggies could make more history. The MIAC will institute a four-team playoff for the first time this season, with semifinal and final rounds both set up in two-game/minigame formats. And the American Women's College Hockey Alliance will be sponsoring a Division III (non-scholarship) national championship for the first time this season, pitting the playoff champions of the MIAC and the ECAC in a two-game/minigame playoff.
With one of the deepest returning lineups in the nation for fifth-year head coach Jill Pohtilla, the Auggies could be considered among the favorites to claim the inaugural national championship.
Augsburg only lost one player to graduation from last year's roster, and returns 22 letterwinners -- including three All-Americans -- to the lineup for 1999-2000. All 22 return with significant varsity experience. Consider that last year, 22 of the 23 non-goalies on the squad scored at least one goal or had an assist, giving Augsburg the most balance of any small-college team in the nation.
Three AWCHA second-team All-Americans return to the Auggie lineup. Forward Angie Rieger (Jr., Courtland, Minn./New Ulm Public HS), Augsburg's leading scorer last year (16 goals, 6 assists, 22 points), earned All-America honors for the second year in a row last year.
Defender Emily Miller (Sr., Blaime, Minn.), Augsburg's third-leading scorer (5 goals, 9 assists, 14 points), also earned All-America honors, along with goalie Meg Schmidt (Sr., West St. Paul, Minn./Henry Sibley HS), Augsburg's leading goalie the last three years (2.35 GAA, .925 save percentage, 10-5-1 record in 1998-99). All three also earned first-team All-MIAC honors.
Two other honorable mention all-conference selections return -- forward Stephanie Johnson (Jr., Champlin, Minn./Anoka HS), who had 19 points (7 goals, 12 assists) and forward Cindy Drum (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis./Nicolet HS), who had 12 points (6 goals, 6 assists).
Other key players returning to the Auggies include: forward Annie Simons (Sr., South St. Paul, Minn.; 6 goals, 4 assists, 10 points), forward Amber Nadreau (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service HS; 5 goals, 5 assists, 10 points), forward Genevieve Antonello (So., New Brighton, Minn./Minnehaha Academy; 5 goals, 4 assists, 9 points), and forward Carrie McCarville (Jr., Hopkins, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret HS; 3 goals, 6 assists, 9 points).
Erica Johnson (Sr., Blaine, Minn.), a 1997-98 honorable mention All-America
selection by Women's Hockey News magazine, also returns. The leading scorer
for the Auggies in 1997-98 (6 goals, 9 assists, 15 points), she had eight
points (4 goals, 4 assists) last year.
