Season Outlook/Notes:

Last year's inaugural varsity women's hockey season at St. Thomas had its ups and downs. Coach Kevin Gorg had limited experience and depth and his players faced a grueling early schedule against mostly extablished teams. After a 2-11 start where they were often outscored badly, the Toms won six in a row and finished 8-12.

This year's team returns 15 of the 18 players from last season and has added several promising transfers and freshmen. "It makes such a difference to actually have enough prospective players to have a tryout this season," Gorg said. "We know we have to build a little each year. Last year the women really worked hard and got better by the end of the season. With only 17 players we were able to get a lot of ice time. I think we have good chemistry and good attitudes. I think we have the type of goalies who may be able to help us steal some games as we continue to improve as a program."

UST will play a more realistic schedule this year, replacing scholarship teams like Minnesota State, Mankato and St. Cloud State. New MIAC varsity teams Concordia-Moorhead and Bethel and club team Hamline are on the schedule for six games. Gorg said established conference teams Gustavus, St. Mary's and Augsburg are still the clear favorites, but making the four-team MIAC playoffs is his team's goal.

Top returners include leading scorers Michelle Campbell (11g-2a/13 points), Heather Martin (2-8/10) and Tina Simonson (4-3/7) and goalie Kim Mrozinski (6-6, .854, 5.20). Two Gustavus transfers expected to help immediately are senior Erica Buck (7-8/15 last year for Gusties) and soph Sina Zimmerman (6-6/12 for Gusties). New goalie Jill Janikowski of Lakeville also should contribute immediately.
