Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID

The College of St. Benedict Blazers move into their third season of play with an extremely positive outlook.  Following a successful inaugural season and a second season that saw the program grow in leaps and bounds the Blazers look to build on a 22-23-2 overall record.  The Blazers also have a new look behind the bench as Bill Kelly and Tom Peart have switched roles. Peart and Kelly, along with student assistant coach Ben Shanahan put great effort into recruiting and brought in 10 talented first year players to go with 10 returning letter winners.

The new Blazers add a great deal of speed, scoring ability and mobility, as well as creativeness in the attacking zone and solid play in the defensive zone.  St. Ben's will throw two new forechecks and a new power play at their opponents this coming season.  Fans of the game will see a great deal of puck movement and aggressiveness all over the ice, but they will also recognize the legacy of the past teams, namely- tenacity, an incredible work ethic and the ability to have fun playing the great game of hockey.  St. Ben's is ready to step up and become one of the premier women's Division III College ice hockey programs in the state.

The Blazers open up their season on November 6th, with a non-conference game at Division I Bemidji State University and the first home game is November 12th, versus the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. St. Ben's first conference opponent is the College of St. Catherine on December 1st.  The favorites in the MIAC are Augsburg College, the first ever varsity team in the state of Minnesota, Gustavus Adolphus College, and St. Mary's University.  All three are returning a core group of players that have great skills and extensive experience and all three tied for the first ever MIAC Championship. St. Ben's, with their experienced returning players and influx of new talent, look to challenge for the conference title in the 1999-2000 season. St. Thomas and St. Catherine look to be improved this season and Bethel and Concordia-Moorhead will join the conference as first year teams.

Next year the MIAC will have at least one new team added to the conference, as Hamline has stated that they will compete as a varsity team in the 2000-2001 season.  The top four teams, based on the season long standings, will compete in the first ever MIAC Women's Ice Hockey play-offs at the end of the regular season.  An added incentive is that the winner of the MIAC play-offs gains an automatic berth in the National Championship sponsored by the American Women's College Hockey Alliance, which will be held in Boston in late March.
