The News 2002 Concordia Football vs. Augsburg Saturday, October 12, 1:00  Concordia 38 Augsburg 13 ( Final ) Recap: The trend in the MIAC was one of upsets, with Gustavus shocking St. Thomas and Bethel clipping St. Olaf, but the Cobbers did what they were supposed to, getting another strong team effort on their way to a 38-13 win over Augsburg.  The first quarter went by scoreless, but the Cobbers jumped on the board on the first play of the second quarter, a two-yard plunge by Jeremy Hinderks (Jr., Renville, Minn.). Quarterback Ryan Hebrink (Jr., Sacred Heart, Minn.) put the Cobbers up 14-0 with 9:52 left in the half, finding a hole and running in from 49 yards out. Hebrink then went to work through the air, hooking up with Shawn Reile (So., Moorhead, Minn.) on a 26-yard touchdown pass with 2:32 to go in the half, giving the Cobbers a 21-0 halftime advantage.

Cobbers Avoid Upset Plague, Top Augsburg 38-13.

The trend in the MIAC was one of upsets, with Gustavus shocking St. Thomas and Bethel clipping St. Olaf, but the Cobbers did what they were supposed to, getting another strong team effort on their way to a 38-13 win over Augsburg.

The first quarter went by scoreless, but the Cobbers jumped on the board on the first play of the second quarter, a two-yard plunge by Jeremy Hinderks (Jr., Renville, Minn.). Augsburg cut the lead to 21-7 with 13:25 left in the third quarter on a 16-yard pass from Dave Fransen to Yarzue Slowon. The Cobbers had the answer however, as Bobby Clark (Jr., Seeley Lake, Mont.) broke loose for a 54-yard touchdown run on the first play of the following drive. The Auggies returned the favor on another scoring strike from Fransen to Slowon, a 10-yard pass with 10:16 remaining in the third quarter, cutting the lead to 28-13. The Cobbers put the game away on a second touchdown pass from Hebrink to Reile, a 31-yard strike with 3:17 left in the third. Brian Halverson (Fr., Fargo, N. Dak) tacked on a 27-yard field goal, his third of the season, to give the Cobbers a 38-13 victory.

Next on the schedule for the Cobbers is a tough non-conference game on the road at the University of Wisconsin - Stout on Saturday, October 19, before returning home for a matchup with MIAC powerhouse St. John's on Saturday, October 26.

Cobbers Hope to Keep Unbeaten MIAC Streak Alive!

Welcome home alumni, friends and family. This year’s edition of the homecoming will have a little more meaning than in recent history since the Cobbers find themselves in the heat of the league championship race. Concordia hasn’t opened the MIAC season with four straight wins since the 1999 season when they finished tied for fourth in the conference. The last time they opened with five MIAC victories was 1997 when they finished second in the league and made the NCAA playoffs. ..Concordia’s 2002 team has been accomplishing their success through a stellar defense and an opportunistic offense. The defense is the top-rated unit in the MIAC and averages giving up only 184 yards per game. They also lead the league in rush defense, allowing, a scant, 43 yards per game on the ground…The Cobbers also lead the MIAC in sacks with 16….Individually, the Cobbers have a couple of players at the top of the statistical charts. Josh Vickerman is leading in interceptions with 3,  Bobby Clark leads the league in TD’s with 7 and Ryan Hebrink is the league’s top-rated passer…Clark and Hebrink were named  MIAC players of the week this past week. Clark as the special teams player of the week, and Hebrink as co-offensive player of the week.

History Lesson: Concordia leads the Series 45-12-2.
Last Year: Ryan Hebrink (So., Sacred Heart, Minn./BDRSH HS) threw three touchdown passes and Concordia College-Moorhead picked off four Augsburg College passes, as the Cobbers cruised to a 33-3, season-ending victory in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Friday afternoon at the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome.
     Hebrink completed eight of his 10 passes for 99 yards, but three were for touchdowns -- two to Jeff Hertel (Sr., Fargo, N.D./South HS), as the Cobbers finished their season at 5-5 overall and 4-5 in the MIAC. The Cobbers outgained the Auggies by a 376-247 margin, putting together 277 yards of rushing on 57 carries in the contest.
