11/5 Tommies top Cobbers 22-7
by Jerry Pyle
The St. Thomas defense shut down the Cobbers on the way to a 22-7 win at the Fargodome tonight, keeping alive the Tommies' hopes for a title share and dashing the Cobber hopes of post season play. Both teams are now 6-3 overall, 6-2 in the MIAC. St. John's stands alone atop the MIAC heading into Saturday play.
After jumping to a 7-0 lead with 2:30 left in the first quarter the Cobbers were held at bay. Concordia gained just 46 yards rushing and completed just 11 of 27 passes for 158 yards. The Tommies picked off 3 Cobber passes, the last one being a 35 yard TD return by Steve Nolander with 6:06 left to seal the win. The Cobbers also committed 9 penalties for 77 yards and bobbled at least four snaps from center.
The Tommies had their own troubles in this game between the league's top two defenses. St. Thomas rushed for 114 yards and threw for just 131 yards. The difference in the game though was Tommie quarterback Greg Kaiser's ability to hit on 13 of 17 passes.
St. Thomas tied the game early in the second period on a Jon Learn 16 yard reception from Kaiser. They pulled ahead 10-7 on a Josh Brand 24 yard field goal with 6:52 left in the first half. The Cobbers had a chance to tie the game in the last minute of the first half but failed in three tries after getting to first and goal from the 7 and then missed on an 33 yard fourth down field goal attempt.
After a scoreless third period Tommie Tim Balthazor picked off a Cobber pass at the 45 and returned it 20 yards to the Cobber 25. Seven plays later Kaiser ran it in from the one to make it 16-7. St. Thomas missed on a two point conversion. Three minutes later Nolander's interception return for a TD secured the Tommie win.
Concordia ends the season against Augsburg in the Metrodome Friday, Nov. 12 at 2:00. They'll be hoping to win that and then see the Gusties beat St. John's in Friday's 5:00 game at the Metrodome. That scenario would give the Cobbers a share of the title. St. Thomas takes on Hamline Thurday night and, if they win, will join the Cobbers in cheering for the Gusties Friday. My view is that if there is a 5-way tie for the title at 7-2 St. Thomas gets the MIAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tourney.
Pre-Game Program notes, by Jerry Pyle, Concordia SID 11/4
St. Thomas vs Concordia at Fargodome, MIAC Football, Nov. 5, 1999, 8:00 p.m. (Doors open at 7:00)
Concordia, at 6-1 in the MIAC, is two wins away from getting at least a share of the MIAC title and a possible NCAA playoff bid. But St. Thomas, at 5-2, is clinging to their own title share hopes and clearly has the tools to derail the Cobbers. Among the numerous playoff possibilities is this one: In a 5-way tie for the MIAC title at 7-2 St. Thomas would get the league's automatic bid to the NCAA playoffs.
The Cobber defense leads the league in points allowed at just 7.7 per game. But Friday they'll be facing the MIAC's best quarterback in Greg Kaiser. Kaiser has connected on 66% of his MIAC passes for 196 yards per game and 9 TDs. If the Cobber front line gives Kaiser time the Cobber D-backs may be in for a long night.
Concordia's resurgent offense has racked up 84 points in the past two
games and leads the league in rushing at 232 yards per game. But they'll
be facing a Tommie defense that is giving up the fewest yards per game
in the league, 252.

Game Notes, by Gene McGivern, UST SID
Charting St. Thomas senior QB Greg Kaiser
*UST senior QB Greg Kaiser's
226-yard game vs. Bethel let him move into 15th place in Minnesota collegiate
history in career passing yards with 6,115. He is 544 yards out of 10th
place on the list. He ranks second on the all-time UST list behnd Chris
esterley. He also ranks third all-time among Minnesota collegians in completion
percentage (.613); fourth in TD-to-interception ratio (52-21), and eighth
in TD passes (52).
*Kaiser has nine career games of 275 or more passing yards.
*Kaiser has thrown at least one TD pass in 25 of his 27 career starts. UST is 18-6 in Kaiser's 24 career MIAC starts. He has directed second-half or overtime comeback victories in six of those 18 wins.
*Kaiser was named MIAC Offensive Player of the Week Oct. 4 after leading Toms to 18-17 win at Gustavus (now 5-1). He was 25-of-32 for 247 yards, 2 TDs and one interception, and was 4-of-5 in fourth- down conversions... In the 27-6 win over Carleton Oct. 16, he completed 16-of-22 for 279 yards and no interceptions.
*In his first season of college track & field (1999), Kaiser had the third best javelin throw among NCAA Division III athletes with 206-0 throw at the MIAC Championships. That set meet and school records and qualifying him for the national meet, where he placed eighth in 189-6 to earn All-American honors.
*Kaiser has a 3.87 gpa while majoring in Business and has been honored as a 1996 GTE Academic All-American. This year, he's been honored as a Burger King National Scholar Athlete for NCAA Division III. Out of more than 17,000 football players from 221 teams in Division III, 20 are honored each year by Burger King. St. Thomas receives $10,000 to its general scholarship fund in Kaiser's name. It's the third time in the five-year history of the award that UST has had a winner -- Curt Behrns (1995) and Chris Esterley (1996) were previous recipients.
More UST notes:
St. Thomas had an 18-yard field-goal attempt blocked on the game's final
play and lost a 22-20 MIAC football decision to Bethel Saturday at O'Shaughnessy
Stadium... The loss knocked St. Thomas out of a first place tie in the
conference with two games remaining and ended the Toms' four-game winning
streak... UST plays next Friday at Concordia in the Fargodome (8 p.m.).
A win could keep the Toms' hopes alive for a tie for the MIAC championship...
The Toms outgained Bethel in total offense 378-249, but couldn't overcome
the Royals' two TDs and 272 yards gained on five kick/punt returns... The
disappointing finish spoiled a strong performance by QB Greg Kaiser (SR-Mora)
who ran for two TDs (27, 1) and threw a TD pass to his brother Andy Kaiser
(SO-Mora). Greg finished 17-of-27 passing (no interceptions ) for 226 yards,
and was 3-for-3 in fourth-down conversions on the game. He threw his 52nd
career TD pass and surpassed 6,000 career passing yards (now at 6,115)
to move into 15th on the Minnesota collegiate career passing list... Bethel
scored twice in the first half off long punt and kick returns, and set
up their final TD with another long return. Kirk Midthun's 88-yard punt
return put the Royals up 7-0... After the Toms tied it 7-7, Bethel's Gary
Stone ran 83 yards on the ensuing kickoff. A PAT run made it 15-7. UST
answered with a 27-yard Kaiser TD run -- a play that featured five broken
tackles -- to make it 15-13, but their PAT pass bid was ruled out of bounds
and the lead stayed at two points... Stone returned the second-half kickoff
53 yards to the UST 40. The Royals drove 40 yards in five plays to
go ahead 22-13... UST pulled within 22-20 midway through the third period
as Kaiser ran over the goal on a 4th-and-one situation. The Toms' made
a late bid as they stopped Bethel on 4th-and-2 at the Tommie 18-yard line
with 5:55 left to take over on downs. Three plays later on 4th-and-1 at
the UST 30, Kaiser completed a pass to his brother Andy, a defensive end
who also plays tight end. Andy turned the short catch into a 52-yard gain
-- carrying four Bethel defenders the final 15 yards -- to the Bethel 18
with 2:00 to play... Three plays later, Kaiser completed a 3rd-and-3 pass
to tight end Jon Learn (SO-Red Wing) to give the Toms had first-and-goal
on the Bethel 6-yard line with 1:21 left. UST gained three yards on first
down, but Bethel's Eric Carlson sacked Kaiser on second down for a loss
of 10 back to the Bethel 13. Kaiser completed a pass to Andrew Hilliard
(FR-Woodbury) for 12 yards to the Bethel one-yard line... On 4th-and-1
in the final 30 seconds, UST let the clock wind down and took time out
to line up for an 18-yard field goal from the left hash mark. UST's Josh
Brand (JR-Shoreview/ Totino-Grace) 's kick came out low and Bethel blocked
it to preserve the Bethel win... Frank Streit (SR-LeRoy/ LeRoy-Ostrander)
had a forced fumble and two sacks among his 13 tackles; Blane Tetreault
(SR-Fridley) had 13 tackles and a fumble recovery; Darren Nelson (SR-Mpls./Holy
Angels) had an interception and eight tackles; and Tim Balthazor (SR-Champlin/Champlin
Park) returned an interception 32 yards... UST played without injured RB
Marcus Ludtke (JR-Albert Lea), but freshman Jake Barkley (FR-Plymouth/
Robbinsdale Armstrong) rushed 24 times for 97 yards; Justin Hall (FR-Oakdale/Tartan)
had four catches for 73 yards.
