Defensive End 6-2, 235 Mapleton ND Fargo Oak Grove HS Class of 2001 Five sacks vs Hamline 10/4 Named MIACDefensive Player of the Week |
For the second straight week the Cobbers turned in a shaky first half offensively and still came away with a win. The Cobbers, 3-1 overall, 3-0 in the MIAC, won at Hamline 14-6 after trailing 6-0 at the half. Hamline fell to 1-3 overall, 0-3 in the MIAC.
Concordia lost four fumbles and threw an interception in the first half. Mean time, Hamline got on the board with a 1-yard Jon Cleveland TD reception from Tim Couchman with 2:29 left in the half.
It would have been a lot worse for the Cobbers, particularly in that first half, had they not gotten outstanding defensive play. The Cobber defense, often taking the field with miserable field position, put great pressure on Hamline's Couchman, holding him to 11 of 26 passing for 124 yards. Cobber defensive end Mark Hankel led the defensive charge, recording five of the Cobbers' six sacks. Hamline was held to 79 net yards rushing for the game.
Concordia came out and controlled the second half much the way they did in last week's 35-6 win at Carleton after leading 7-6 at the half, by hanging onto the football and grinding out yards on the ground.
The Cobbers, who controlled the ball for 20 minutes in the second half, went ahead 7-6 on a 2 yard TD run by fullback Nathan Reiff with 5:59 left in the third quarter. Concordia gave itself some breathing room with 6:14 left in the game when quarterback Jeff Hertel hooked up with Raliegh Schmidt for a 20 yard TD pass to provide the final 14-6 margin.
The Cobbers managed 148 rushing yards despite missing their top two tailbacks, Jason Braaten and Joel Ferrie, and their backup fullback, John Doebler, all out with ankle injuries. Reiff led the Cobber rushers with 66 yards on 25 carries. Hertel rushed for 45 yards and was 10 for 23 passing for 114 yards.
Concordia hosts winless St. Olaf Oct. 9 in Concordia's homecoming game. Hamline travels to Carleton.
