Mandy Pearson Named to the D3hoops.com West Region Second Team.

Mandy Pearson (Jr., Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins HS) capped her outstanding season by being named to the D3hoops.com West Region Second Team. It is the first time in her career that she has received a regional honor. Pearson was one of only five players from the MIAC to earn All-Region honors.

Gustavus' Angie Peterson was named to the All-Region First Team, while Megan Vig of Carleton also garnered second team honors. Afton Hanson of Macalester and Selina Theisen from Augsburg were named to the All-Region Third Team.

Players were nominated for these awards by the Sports Information Directors at the various schools, who were contacted several times as the season wound down to make their players eligible. The ballot was then distributed to regional SIDs, who voted for 10 players.

Pearson was named the Most Valuable Player in the MIAC earlier in the month. She was also also voted to the MIAC All-Conference Team. It is the second consecutive season that she has been named to the all-conference team, and third year that she has been honored with conference postseason awards.

She helped lead the Cobbers to their best record since the 1990-91 season. The team finished with a 21-7 mark and made it all the way to the MIAC playoff championship game, a first in school history. Concordia also set a school record for biggest improvement in one season. The Cobbers improved a full seven games from the 2002-03 season.

Pearson finished the season by being ranked in the top 35 in the nation in three different statistical categories. She was eighth in assists per game (6.3), 29th in steals per game (3.5) and 32nd in free throw percentage (82.3%). She led the MIAC in assists (6.50 apg), was second in steals (3.73 spg) and 12th in overall scoring (13.7 ppg). She was also third in free throw percentage and fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.21).(More)

"March Madness"
by Jim Cella

March 17, 2004

"March Madness" has arrived in Memorial Auditorium and the sports information office is just finishing the move into the spacious new office - complete with built-in sauna and window coverings. Since we have been occupied with trying to move all the files and folders from the late 1970's, we will leave you with another positive message acquired through my e-mail. It has even more meaning to me because one of my friends was killed in the 9/11 attacks, so I have also taken the time to do a lot more "stopping and smelling the roses" since that day. The author of this passage is unknown.

Lisa Beamer on Good Morning America - If you remember, she's the wife of Todd Beamer who said "Let's Roll!" and helped take down the plane  that was heading for Washington, D.C.

She said it's the little things that she misses most about Todd, such as hearing the garage door open as he came home, and her children running to meet him She's now the Mom of a beautiful little girl, Mary.

Lisa recalled this story:

I had a very special teacher in high school many years ago whose husband died suddenly of a heart attack. About a week after his death, she shared some of her insight with a classroom of students. As the late afternoon sunlight came streaming in through the classroom windows and the class was nearly over, she moved a few things aside on the edge of her dsk and sat down there.

With a gentle look of reflection on her face, she paused and said, "Class is over. I would like to share with all of you, a thought that is unrelated to class, but which I feel is very important.

"Each of us is put here on earth to learn, share, love, appreciate and give of ourselves. None of us knows when this fantastic experience will end. It can be taken away at any moment. Perhaps this is the Powers way of telling us that we must make the most out of every single day."

Her eyes beginning to water, she went on, "So I would like you all to make me a promise. From now on, on your way to school, or on your way home, find something beautiful to notice. It doesn't have to be something you see, it could be a scent, perhaps of freshly baked bread wafting out of someone's house, or it could be the sound of the breeze slightly rustling the leaves in the trees, or the way the morning light catches one autumn leaf as it falls gently to the ground.

"Please look for these things, and cherish them. For, although it may sound trite to some, these things are the 'stuff' of life. The little things we are put here on earth to enjoy. The things we often take for granted. We must make it important to notice them, for at anytime it can all be taken away."

The class was completely quiet. We all picked up our books and filed out of the room silently. That afternoon, I noticed more things on my way home from school than I had that whole semester.

Every once in a while, I think of that teacher and remember what an impression she made on all of us, and I try to appreciate all of those things that sometimes we all overlook.

Take notice of something special you see on your lunch hour today.

Go barefoot, or walk on the beach at sunset. Stop off on the way home tonight to get a double dip ice cream cone. For as we get older, is not the things we did that we often regret, but the things we didn't do.

If you like this, please pass it on to a friend.

Remember, life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

I hope that everyone takes the time to appreciate all the how many great things we have been given. Especially in these days when our thoughts are on the tremendous physical feats that athletes can accomplish.

From inside the box and dreaming, that's this week's different perspective.
