Renee Splichal Named MIAC Field Athlete of the Week.

Concordia senior Renee Splichal (Garrison, N.Dak.) was named the MIAC Field Athlete of the Week for her performance at the Cobber Invitational.

Splichal became the first female at Concordia to break the 11-foot barrier in the pole vault. The senior cleared the bar at 11-1 and finished second in the event in the Cobber Invitational last weekend. Her vault ranks 11th nationally, and provisionally qualifies her for the NCAA Division III National Meet. It is also the second best vault in the MIAC this season.

She also finished sixth in the triple jump with a personal best distance, which ranks her fifth in the MIAC. Splichal, currently the top ranked pentathlete in the MIAC, also posted a 9.07 in the 55 hurdles (ranked 9th in the MIAC) and tied her high jump PR of 4-9.75.
Concordia senior guard Josh Downey (Sr., Bigfork, Mont.) was named the MIAC Player of the Week. It is the first time in his career that he has won the honor.

Latest News and Notes:
- The Concordia men’s basketball is having the third best season in men’s basketball history, and has a chance to become the winningest team in school history. The Cobbers are currently 15-4 in the MIAC and 17-6 overall. The record for most wins in a season is 21 held by the 1995-96 team that won the MIAC playoff championship and advanced to the NCAA playoffs. The men’s program at Concordia has only recorded one other 20-win season. That came under former head coach John Eidsness back in the 1980-81 season when the team went 20-9 overall and won the MIAC regular season championship.

- Concordia is currently leading the MIAC in field goal percentage (51.2%), free throw percentage (78.3) and is second in 3-point field goal percentage (41.9). All three of those numbers would be school records if the season ended today. The Cobbers are also in the top 15 in the nation in all three categories. Currently, Concordia is 10th in free throw percentage, 12th in field goal percentage and 12th in 3-point field goal percentage.

- Joe Bueckers (Sr., Pine River, Minn./Pine River-Backus HS), Josh Downey (Sr., Bigfork, Mont.) and Jason Miller are the top shooters in the MIAC so far this season. Bueckers is leading the conference in free throw percentage (95.0%), Downey is on top in 3-point field goal percentage (53.8) and Miller leads in field goal percentage (63.6).

The last time a Cobber women’s team won 20 games was back in the 1995-96 season when the team went 20-6, finished third in the MIAC and advanced to the national playoffs.

- The Concordia women’s basketball team has held five different opponents under 50 points this season. That is the most since the 1997-98 season when they accomplished the feat on six different occasions.

- Two Cobber individual players are among the top ten in the nation in different statistical categories. Mandy Pearson (Jr., Watkins, Minn./Eden Valley-Watkins HS) is seventh in assists per game (6.3) and Beth Drager (Sr., Wood Lake, Minn./Lakeview HS) is eighth in blocked shots per game (3.5).

The closest match of the day was at the number five singles match, where first-year player Paul Tuchscherer (Baxter, Minn., Brainerd HS) lost to Gustavus' Teddy Naaaif 6-3, 6-3. Tuchscherer teamed with Ryan Smith (Fr., Grand Forks, N.Dak./Red River) to give the Gusties' number two double team all they could handle. The Tuchscherer/Smith team lost 8-4 to Jesse Brauer and Claudio Bravo.

- The Cobbers' top returning player is Jacob Thomas (Jr., Indian Hills, Colo./Conifer HS) who played all last season as the team's number one singles player and compiled a record of 10-4. Recent Results: Concordia 24 at UW-Eau Claire 22 at UW-Eau Claire Quad - Meet Results; Concordia 10 at UW-Steven Point 37 at UW-Eau Claire Quad - Meet Results
Upcoming Events: at NCAA Great Lakes Region Meet at Concordia Univ. (Mequon, WI) on Saturday, February 21 at 9:00am

Latest News and Notes:
- The Cobber wrestling squad participated in their final invitational before this weekend's NCAA Great Lakes Regional Meet. Concordia traveled to UW-Eau Claire to compete in the UW-Eau Claire Quadrangular. Doug Perry's team wrestled two dual matches and came away with a split. In the first match of the weekend, the Cobbers beat host UW-Eau Claire 24-22. In the final match of the day, the Cobbers dropped a 37-10 decision to UW-Stevens Point.

- Lee Rahrlien (So., Graceville, Minn./C-G-B HS) has been the top wrestler for the Cobbers in 2003-04. He won both of his matches at 157 over the weekend and currently has a record of 21-10. Since the Christmas break he has posted a record of 14-6. The bad news for Rahrlien is that he is in one of the toughest regions in the nation for his weight class . The number one seed in the region is Marcus LeVesseur of Augsburg, who has never lost a match in college, and is the defending national champion. Earlier this year, Rahrlien was pinned by LeVesseur, but two weeks ago Rahrlien came back and nearly defeated LeVesseur before falling in a decision.

"It's Good To Be Healthy"

It was a pretty good week in Cobberville, as my former mentor used to say. Both the men's and women's basketball teams clinched berths in the MIAC playoffs, the men's hockey team picked themselves up after being winless for 16 straight games and is now in a battle for the MIAC playoffs, the women's track and field team continues to break milestones and the softball and baseball teams are well into their third week of practice - so spring must certainly be around the corner.

The only bad news from the Great White North is that I have come down with the last cold/flu bug of the season and my daughter has spent the past few days bedridden with the flu. So, unfortunately this week's "Different Perspective" column was put on the back burner to get everyone healthy and get ready for the upcoming playoff runs by the different Cobber teams.

Fear not, I will leave you with something to pass the next few minutes. A good friend of mine always passes along those "words of wisdom" e-mails. I always read them because they usually have at least one humorous, or thoughtful, piece of advice. The following stories were forwarded to me; you may have received this e-mail yourself. All the stories are true, but the person who compiled them is unknown. I made a few edits to clean up the language. These really cracked me up because I could see my kids doing the same things! Anyway, enjoy the stories and we'll see you next week!

1. A small boy is sent to bed by his father.

Five minutes later....."Da-ad...." "I'm thirsty. Can you bring me a drink of water?"

"No, You had your chance. Lights out."

Five minutes later: "Da-aaaad....."

"WHAT?"

"I'm THIRSTY. Can I have a drink of water??"

"I told you NO! If you ask again, I'll have to spank you!!"

Five minutes later......"Daaaa-aaaad....."

"WHAT!"

"When you come in to spank me, can you bring a drink of water?"

2. An exasperated mother, whose son was always getting into mischief, finally asked him "How do you expect to get into Heaven?"

The boy thought it over and said, "Well, I'll run in and out and in and out and keep slamming the door until St. Peter says, 'For Heaven's sake, Dylan, come in or stay out!'"

3. One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her son into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice "Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?"

The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. "I can't dear," she said. "I have to sleep in Daddy's room."

A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice:

"The big sissy."

4. It was that time, during the Sunday morning service, for the children's sermon. All the children were invited to come forward.

One little girl was wearing a particularly pretty dress and, as she sat down, the pastor leaned over and said, That is a very pretty dress. Is it your Easter Dress?" The little girl replied, directly into the pastor's clip-on microphone, "Yes, and my Mom says it's a bitch to iron."

5. A little boy was doing his math homework. He said to himself, "Two plus five, that son of a bitch is seven. Three plus six, that son of

a bitch is nine...." His mother heard what he was saying and gasped, "What are you doing?"

The little boy answered, "I'm doing my math homework, Mom."

"And this is how your teacher taught you to do it?" the mother asked

"Yes," he answered.

Infuriated, the mother asked the teacher the next day, "What are you teaching my son in math?"

The teacher replied, "Right now, we are learning addition."

The mother asked, "And are you teaching them to say two plus two, that son of a bitch is four?"

After the teacher stopped laughing, she answered, "What I taught them was, two plus two, THE SUM OF WHICH, is four."

6. One day the first grade teacher was reading the story of  Chicken Little to her class. She came to the part of the story where Chicken Little tried to warn the farmer. She read, ".... and so Chicken Little went up to the farmer and said, "The sky is falling, the sky is falling!"

The teacher paused then asked the class, "And what do you think that farmer said?"

One little girl raised her hand and said, "I think he said: 'Holy S#$%! A talking chicken!'"

The teacher was unable to teach for the next 10 minutes.

7. A certain little girl, when asked her name, would reply, "I'm Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter."

Her mother told her this was wrong, she must say, "I'm Jane Sugarbrown."

The Vicar spoke to her in Sunday School, and said, "Aren't you Mr. Sugarbrown's daughter?"

She replied, "I thought I was, but mother says I'm not."

8. A little girl asked her mother, "Can I go outside and play with the boys?"

Her mother replied, "No, you can't play with the boys; they're too rough."

The little girl thought about it for a few moments and asked, "If I can find a smooth one, can I play with him?"
