"Giving Thanks"
The fall seasons have almost been laid to rest and the winter sports are starting to stride into their usual repetition practices and games. Thanksgiving break is this week and although the Cobber Sports Weekly (CSW) staff does not get a large amount of time to spend with their loved ones - due to home hockey games and basketball games sandwiched around turkey day, it is a time of the year to be thankful. A time to appreciate all the blessings that have been bestowed upon us and no matter how much, or little, time we have to spend with family and friends - it is a fun time to reflect and give thanks.
The CSW staff wants to spend this inaugural "Different Perspective" piece giving thanks for all the great things that have happened, or are happening, around the Concordia athletic department.
First off, we want to give thanks for having had the guidance and leadership of one of the great athletic directors in the MIAC. Although Armin Pipho retired at the end of last school year, his legacy lives on in all the coaches and staff that he hired and all the events he continues to watch over.
For this past fall, we want to give our thanks to the entire women's volleyball team and staff who showed us that even though you have to deal with the largest amount of travel, missed class time and endless bus trips - you can still put a championship team on the court. We are thankful that as good of a team as they showed us on the court at the end of the season, they are even of a higher class off the court. They not only exceed on the playing field but also in the classroom. We are very thankful that they wear maroon and gold and that they will all have at least one more year to showcase their talents.
We are also thankful that the team inspired the Cobber student community to come together and show what fan participation can mean to the home team. The men's basketball team and women's hockey team formed a group of fans that actively cheered for the Cobbers and made the players feel like they were playing in a packed Cameron Indoor Stadium. The CSW staff hoped that other players from the other teams at Concordia will take the initiative, and voraciously support Cobber athletic teams throughout the winter and spring and make Concordia one of the toughest places to play in the MIAC.
We are thankful for the women's soccer team, and especially the class of first-year players who pushed a program from being an "also-ran" into one that will have to be dealt with for years, at least three more, to come. We are also grateful for their coach Dan Weiler who has pushed, prodded, listened and worked hard in recruiting to get the team where it is today. That bright light you see coming from the top of Memorial Auditorium is not one of the special spotlights for the Christmas concert, it is the shine of a program that has a very promising future.
We give thanks at the end of November for a special group of football players that go unnoticed, unrecognized the whole season. While the accolades are handed out on a weekly basis to quarterback Ryan Hebrink, running back Bobby Clark and wide receiver Andrew Passanante - the offensive line quietly goes about their job and lets the other players grab all the records and attention. Nick Didier, Lance Mumm, David Uselman, Mitch Maxwell and Ryan Johnson are not names you ever hear of, but without them, the team would not have averaged a league-high 287 yards in rushing every game (the second straight year that they have led the league in that category) nor would the team have scored a school-record 353 points.
We want to thank senior running back Jeremy Hinderks for being one of the unsung heroes behind the success of the Cobber football and baseball teams the past two seasons. A player that doesn't receive the accolades of his offensive backfield counterparts in football, Hinderks is a tremendous team leader in both sports. If the CSW staff had to choose one player from any sport at Concordia to be a captain and team leader, Hinderks would be at the top of the list. After showing his resolve during the baseball team's chase for the MIAC title last spring, we know that Hinderks could lead any team, any sport.
We are thankful that women's golfer Katie Taylor chose to come to Concordia and show the rest of the MIAC what a great golf program the Cobbers have. Another athlete that most people have never heard of, Taylor is a three-time, all-conference performer who happens to be one of the best student/athletes on the campus. We hope that she has a chance to finish her career by competing at the national tournament in the spring.
We are thankful for cross country runner Nick Myran who showed us what hard work and desire will push you towards. Myran became the first Cobber harrier to earn-all region honors since Jason Trichler accomplished the feat in 1992.
The CSW staff would also like to thank the cross country coaching tandem of Garrick Larson and Marv Roeske for having more passion, energy and "sticktoedness" for their sport then most other coaches in other schools have combined. The dynamic duo are a real blessing for their athletes. They always put their athletes best interest on the front burner and rarely take any credit for all the individual honors that are bestowed upon the athletes in cross country and track.
We are thankful that we had the chance to witness up close the tremendous courage that men's soccer player Jerry Nathan showed the past two seasons. After losing his father to cancer, Nathan became the rock on which the team rested upon. He finished off his career by being named to the MIAC All-Conference Team. An honor, unlike some sports where way too many players gain all-conference honors, that has meaning and disproves the adage that nice guys finish last.
At this time of year we give thanks for all the people behind the scenes that make sure that all the coaches and athletes have the chance to succeed. We want to thank the secretaries, custodians and team managers that work in the athletic department for doing hours of thankless jobs only to see everyone else get credit or get patted on the back. This year we want to recognize these unselfish people and let them know that the athletes and coaches would be very lost without your support.
We are thankful for being able to have watched the Cobber wrestling tournament this past weekend. There is no tongue planted in the collective CSW cheek on that comment. If you have never had the chance to witness a collegiate wrestling tournament, then you are missing one of the truly awe-inspiring exercises in hard work and determination. In a sport where practice means having to withstand two hours of physical punishment only to be rewarded with the chance to work even harder in competition, the players and coaches are the most loyal and dedicated of any sport. They support each other and turn any venue into a traveling village of throw-back athletes who don't just throw out slogans but actually work hard and play harder. Thanks to the, over 250, wrestlers and coaches who showed us how far the human body and spirit can be pushed if given the chance.
Finally, we give thanks that we have the chance to watch more Concordia athletes and more Cobber sports teams excel on the playing field, court, mat and ice rink in the months to come. With all the things that are wrong about high-level Division I athletics, it is nice to know that you can watch athletes who still care more about their sport, teammates and school, then how much people "owe" them and how many corners they can cut to get to the next level.
At this time of year, we wish all the followers of Cobber athletics health, hapiness and the family and friends to be thankful for.
As we leave this inaugural edition of
the different perspective, and get set to feast on all the trimmings, we
would like to give thanks to everyone who took the time out of their busy
schedule to read this rambling.
