Augsburg College 1998-99 Men's Hockey Preview:
Auggies aim for repeat as MIAC champs and return to national tournament

MINNEAPOLIS -- Last year, in the school's 70th season of men's hockey, Augsburg College claimed the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season and playoff championships, finished fourth in the NCAA Division III national tournament, and earned head coach Mike Schwartz National Coach of the Year honors.

What do the Auggies do for an encore?

There's always repeating as MIAC champions and improving upon a 21-8-4 overall (12-3-1 MIAC) record. Making the NCAA national tournament again would be nice. And a national championship -- joining the three NAIA national title banners (1979, 1981 and 1982) already hanging in the Augsburg Ice Arena -- would be a perfect capper.

Schwartz's crew may have just the tools this season for a run at a repeat. Returning five of six starters from last year's team, a total of 25 letterwinners, should make Augsburg one of the favorites in the MIAC men's hockey race. Augsburg was rated sixth in the preseason NCAA Division III men's hockey preseason national poll by U.S. College Hockey Online (http://www.uscollegehockey.com/).

Key among the returners is Ryan McIntosh (So., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS), who earned American Hockey Coaches Association second-team College Division All-America honors in his freshman campaign -- the only freshman among the 24 members of the All-America squad. McIntosh finished 14-2-3 in the nets (7-1-1 MIAC), an .816 winning percentage (third in NCAA Division III), to earn All-MIAC honors, while compiling a 3.24 goals-against-average and a .917 save percentage (sixth in NCAA Division III).

McIntosh spearheaded an Augsburg 15-game unbeaten streak (14-0-1, 14 wins in a row) leading up to the NCAA Division III Final Four in Plattsburgh, N.Y., where the Auggies were swept by eventual national champion Middlebury (Vt.) 5-2 in the national semifinal and host Plattsburgh State (N.Y.) 9-5 in the third-place game. The unbeaten streak was capped by four straight road victories in the postseason -- a MIAC playoff championship series sweep of St. Thomas (at Bloomington Ice Gardens) and an NCAA playoff first-round sweep at Wisconsin-River Falls.

The Auggies graduated five varsity regulars last season -- including Augsburg's leading scorer, second-team AHCA College Division All-America Todd Cary (Indianapolis, Ind./Indianapolis Lutheran HS) and McIntosh's primary backup goalie, Jason Moen (Roseville, Minn.). Forward Brandon Steege (Minneapolis, Minn./Richfield HS) and wingers Joe Fehn (Minneapolis, Minn./Edison HS) and Pat Griswold (Eagan, Minn./Minnehaha Academy) also graduated.

But the heart of Augsburg's lineup returns, including the three top scorers after Cary from last year's lineup and the majority of the team's defense and forward lines.

Captain Trevor Tallackson (Sr., Detroit Lakes, Minn.), an All-MIAC honorable mention selection last year, returns to the center position after scoring 40 points (18 goals, 22 assists) last year. Two-time All-MIAC first-team winger Martin Hlinka (Sr., Bratislava, Slovakia/Farmington HS), an assistant captain, is also back. He missed six games last season due to injury, but on the first line with Cary, still finished second on the team in total points with 44 (14 goals, team-high 30 assists). The Auggies' other assistant captain, two-time All-MIAC honorable mention selection Mario LeBlanc (Sr., Mackenzie, B.C./Prince George HS), was fourth on the team in scoring with 39 points (14 goals, 29 assists) last year from his wing position.

Tallackson and LeBlanc were joined on the Auggies' second line last year by winger Roland Blumer (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service HS), who had 21 points (9 goals, 12 assists). Other forward returners who saw significant playing time last year include Steve LaMere (Jr., Apple Valley, Minn.; 3G-7A--10P), Tony Putt (So., Burnsville, Minn.; 7-8--15) and Joe Fulton (Sr., International Falls, Minn.; 2-8--10).

The Auggies' defense is basically intact from last season, with no seniors among the three defensive pairings back from last year -- Andrew Shermoen (Jr., International Falls, Minn.; 0-7--7) and Anthony Boser (So., Red Wing, Minn.; 3-7--10), Kris Arro (Jr., Etobicoke, Ontario/Scarlett Heights Collegiate HS; 7-10--17) and All-MIAC first-team selection Jonas Giving (Jr., Rasta, Norway/Armstrong HS; 5-15--20), and Shane Spears (So., St. Paul, Minn./Hill-Murray HS; 0-4--4) and Chris McLeod (Jr., Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope HS; 7-8--15).

Schwartz is entering his third season as the Auggies' head coach. Schwartz has compiled a 35-18-5 record in his first two seasons at Augsburg, earning MIAC Coach of the Year honors last season. Steege, who transferred to Augsburg last year from the University of Minnesota, will be an assistant coach for the Auggies, along with Scott Steffen, Stan Blom, Michael Bowman and Doug Long.
