Season Outlook/Notes:
Head Coach Larry Moore looks towards the 1998-99 season with guarded
optimism as he returns 14 letterwinners from a team that finished 11-4-1
in the MIAC and nearly knocked off league co-champion St. Thomas in the
first round of the playoffs. While there are quality players returning,
graduation claimed leading scorer Tim McDonald (20g, 15a), and quality
defensemen Matt Olson and Brent Staples.
The biggest concerns early will be building chemistry on the top three lines and whether some young defensemen can step into leadership roles in front of veteran goaltender Peet Moseley. In regards to creating some offense, senior captain Andy Tripp proved he can put the net as he led the team in goals scored last season with 19.
Junior defenseman Brad Hendrickson, who is a big part of the Gustavus power play, can also score as he contributed 18 goals a year ago. Several other players will be called upon to increase their offensive production this season including senior Matt Grabow (11g, 11a), Matt Tuccitto (12g, 8a) and Josh Kramer (7g, 12a). Coach Moore is also hoping that newcomers Mike Alt, a transfer from the Air Force Academy, and Nick Christensen, a freshman from Bloomington Jefferson, will be able to put some spark in the Gustie attack.
Defensively, Brad Hendrickson is a three-year starter with good ability. He will be team with junior Dave Murphy to form the squad’s top defensive duo. Sophomores Ben Puder and Dan Hamernick moved into the regular defensive rotation in the middle of last season and appear ready to give the Gusties a second solid pairing on the blue line.
The third unit will consist of junior Brent Johnson and freshman standout Brian Westland. Junior Peet Moseley will give Gustavus a very reliable and consistent netminder. Moseley was very effective in MIAC play last season compiling a record of 10-3-1 with a goals against average of 3.17. There appears to be plenty of talent on the 1998-99 Gustavus hockey team it is just a matter of building some chemistry amongst a group that has not played together for very long.
The Gusties will be tested early in their schedule as they open against
UW-Stout, UW-River Falls and UW-Eau Claire from the NCHA and then jump
into MIAC play against title contenders St. Thomas and St. John’s. If they
can hang tough through the early portion of their schedule it is very likely
that Gustavus will be making another appearance in the MIAC Playoffs in
late February.
