1998-99 Saint John's University (Minn.) Hockey Head Coach

John Harrington will begin his sixth season as head hockey coach at Saint John's in 1998-99. In his first five seasons at SJU, Harrington has helped establish a winning tradition that reflects upon his career in the sport of hockey. Harrington has guided the Johnnies to a 84-49-9 record during his first five years with the program. Harrington, the winningest hockey coach in school
history, led the Johnnies to the NCAA tournament in 1996 and 1997.

A member of the 1980 and 1984 United States Olympic hockey teams, Harrington most recently served as an assistant hockey coach at nearby St. Cloud State University. Prior to his move to St. Cloud, Harrington worked as an assistant coach at the University of Denver from 1984 to 1990.

As a player, Harrington was a standout prep athlete at Virginia High School and later starred with the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs from 1975 to 1979. He gained national fame as a member of the U.S. Olympic team that captured the gold medal at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. Harrington went on to play one season of hockey in Lugano, Switzerland, (1980-81) before returning home as a member of the U.S. National Hockey Team in 1981, 1982 and 1983. He completed his international playing career as a member of the 1984 U.S. Olympic hockey team.

A member of the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in Eveleth, Minn., Harrington received the Lester Patrick Award in 1980 for outstanding service to hockey in the U.S. He is a charter member of the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame, a 1990 inductee into the Minnesota Olympic Hall of Fame and a 1997 inductee into the Virginia Hall of Fame.

In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Harrington has served as an assistant coach at the U.S. Junior Olympic Festival (1992) and the National Sports Festival (1990 and 1983). He also served as an assistant coach at Apple Valley High School from 1981 to 1984. In 1995, Harrington served as head coach of Team North at the Olympic Sports Festival in Denver, Colo.

The 1993-94 and 1995-96 MIAC coach-of-the-year, Harrington's Johnnies posted a 17-10, 12-4-0 record in 1997-98. The Johnnies finished third in the MIAC regular season standings and lost in the MIAC playoff semifinal series. In 1996-97, SJU won the MIAC championship and brought home the third-place trophy from the NCAA final four, which was the highest finish ever for a MIAC hockey team in the NCAA Div. III tournament.

In the fall Harrington works as an assistant coach with the Saint John's soccer team.

Season Outlook/Notes:
1998-99 Saint John's University (Minn.) Hockey Preview

In the always rugged MIAC, experience pays off as the Johnnie hockey team completed its 1997-98 campaign with a 17-10, 12-4-0 MIAC record. The Johnnies posted a 17-10, 12-4-0 record in 1997-98. The Johnnies finished third in the MIAC regular season standings and lost in the MIAC playoff semifinal series. In 1996-97, the Johnnies repeated as MIAC regular season and playoff champions and entered the NCAA tournament as the number one seed in the west region. SJU brought home the third place trophy from the NCAA final four in Middlebury, Vt. Expectations are high for the upcoming season as SJU tries to win their third MIAC title in four seasons.

SJU's defense has always been one of its strengths and that should continue in 1998-99 with the return of senior goalkeeper Mark Rice (St. Louis Park). A 1996-97 & 1997-98 All-MIAC selection, Rice owns a career 3.07 goals against average and a 36-14-2 record at SJU. SJU will also benefit from the return of senior defensemen Mike Wehmhoff (Plymouth) and Chris Owens (Mendota Heights).

On offense, SJU brings back seven of last year's top ten scorers including senior Matt Erredge (Austin), who scored 33 goals and 27 assists and was named to the 1998 Titan/AHCA College Division All-America second team. Sophomore Chad Hacker (Alexandria) will return after ranking fourth on the team last winter with 37 points (10 goals and 27 assists). Senior Ryen Ratfield (Shoreview), who was sixth on the team last year with 19 points, will offer veteran poise on the team.

SJU sophomores expected to impact the scoring charts are forwards John Konrad (Bloomington) and Mike Zasada (Cottage Grove). Sophomore defensemen Matt Thompson (St. Louis Park) and Tim Boman (St. Cloud) will see add to the team's success in 1998-99.
