9/17 Nebraska Wesleyan Scores Three Goals in 2nd Half to Win Cobber
Classic III.
Nebraska Wesleyan scored three unanswered in the second half to beat
St. John's and win the third annual Cobber Classic. The Johnnies went ahead
in the first half when Mike Rutter scored on a long shot at 30:00 and kept
the lead until halftime. The Plainsmen scored two goals within 36 seconds
of each other to edge on top. Joe Gohr scored at 53:21 and then Brad Schweer
scored his fourth goal of the tournament at 53:57. Troy Ray added an insurance
goal at 76:15 and Nebraska Wesleyan went on to win their second concsecutive
Cobber Classic title. With the win the Plainsmen improve to 5-0-1 on the
year while the Johnnies suffer their first loss and finish the tournament
with a record of 4-1.

St. John's Soccer Notes:
The SJU soccer opened the 2000 season with three
wins last week, including two wins during a weekend full of matches in
Collegeville.
On Saturday, Sept. 2, sophomore Brian Cleavelend scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Northland. Kevin Kohnen and Kevin Bell teamed up in goal for the shutout. Kohnen made two saves in the win. The complete box score can be found at http://www.csbsju.edu/sjusports/soccertourney090200.html
The next day, Sunday, Sept. 3. SJU scored three second half goals to erase a 1-0 deficit and win going away 3-1. Freshman Joe Schmidt scored the game-winner in the 79th minute for the Johnnies. The Johnnies traveled on Wednesday, Sept. 6, to take on Northwestern of Roseville and came away with a 4-2 victory. Sophomore Jordan Pepper; senior Ross Golla; sophomore Travis Miller; and sophomore Mike Rutter scored goals for SJU.
