Scratch and Claw, But Can't Get Over the Hump and Lose to Macalester.
(St. Paul, Minn)-- Concordia scratched,
climbed, crawled their way back into their MIAC Semifinal game with Macalester,
but could never get over the final hump and lost 79-65. The Cobbers tied
the game midway through the second half, and then watched as the Scots
went on a 16-7 run in the next seven minutes to pull away and finish with
the 14-point victory.
The loss ends Concordia's season with an overall record of 18, the third best season in school history. The Cobbers reached the semifinals of the conference tournament for only the fifth time in the 20-year history of the event. Macalester advances to the championship game where they will face Gustavus on Saturday, February 28 at 7:30pm in St. Peter.
Concordia was uncharacteristically cold from the floor in the first half. The Cobbers shot a frigid 27.3% (6-for-22) from the field, and dug themselves a 20-6 hole in the first eight minutes of the game. They were able to pull back to within six points at the break as Josh Downey (Sr., Bigfork, Mont.) and Keith Eckhoff (So., Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson HS) hit on a pair of 3-point baskets to push the Cobbers within striking distance. Macalester hit on seven of their first ten shots in the game, and Chris Assel was able to knock down a pair of 3-point shots to stake the Scots to the early lead.
In the second half, Concordia quickly close the six-point gap and tied the game on a 3-point bomb from Downey with 17:05 left to go in the game. Macalester scored the next seven points only to see that lead be eaten up by a seven-point run from Concordia that was capped off by a 3-point shot from the left corner from Ryan Templeton (So., Minot, ND).
From that point on, Macalester was able slowly pull away and keep Concordia from mounting another comeback. The closest the Cobbers were able to come in the final seven minutes was six points when Eckhoff hit a 3-pointer with 2:57 remaining to cut the lead to 66-60. The Scots protected the lead in the final stages of the game by hitting on 11-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes.
Downey led the Cobber scoring attack by scoring 20 points and connecting on a trio of 3-point shots. Eckhoff added 19 points and was 3-of-4 from behind the arc. Soren Nelson (Jr., Twin Valley, Minn./Norman County East HS) struggled to find his shooting touch, going 4-of-11 from the floor and finishing with 11 points.
Adam Denny stepped out from the shadows of teammate, and leading MIAC MVP candidate, Ben Van Thorre, to score a team-high 17 points and grab 14 rebounds for Macalester. Denny, a 56% shooter from the floor and 49% from the free throw line entering the game, hit on 6-of-7 shots from the floor and 5-of-6 from the foul line. Van Thorre was limited to only 24 minutes of playing time due to foul trouble and finished with eight points and three rebounds. It is the first time in nine games against the Cobbers that he has failed to score in double figures. Erik Jackson and Brendan Bosman each added 14 points. Chris Assel made three 3-point field goals and finished with 13 points. Wes McFarland added 10 points to put five Scot players in double figures.
Concordia was outrebounded in the game 35-27, and the Scots held a decisive 20-11 edge in second chance points. For the game, the Cobbers shot 37.7% (20-for-53) from the field, which is well below their season average of 50.2%. Macalester shot 45.3% (24-for-53) from the floor and 85.7% (24-for-28) from the free throw line.
The Cobbers finish their season after placing
third in the MIAC with a record of 14-6. The team's final win total of
18, is tied for the third highest number of wins in a season.

must go through Macalester. The fieldhouse only seats 600, so there is
a good chance the game will sell out on Wednesday. There will be an advance
sale of tickets to the general public on Wednesday, February 25, from 4:00
p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Macalester Stadium Lobby (Snelling & St. Claire).
The location of this sale has been switched to the stadium due to a John
Kerry rally at the fieldhouse. On Thursday, gates will open at 5:30 p.m.
for any available/remaining tickets. If the game is sold out before

SERIES STARTED: 1922-23
SERIES HISTORY: Concordia’s win
over the Scots last year broke a four-game losing streak for the Cobbers
against Macalester. After their two wins this season, the Scots have won
six of the last seven in the series and nine of the last eleven....The
longest winning streak for the Cobbers in the series is five games, which
happened from 1988-93. The Scots' longest winning string is 10 games from
1967 until 1973...The most points scored in a single game by a team in
the series is 122 when Concordia beat Macalester 122-98 on February 11,
1995. The 122 points in that game by the Cobbers is the most points they
have ever scored in a single game, and the 220 points by both teams is
the most total points put up in a game in Cobber history.
EARLIER THIS SEASON: Macalester
swept the series for the third time in the past five seasons. The Scots
beat the Cobbers 78-68 in Moorhead on December 13, and won again at home
86-75 on January 31.
LAST YEAR: The teams split the
season series. Macalester won its home game 71-68 on Dec. 11, 2002, while
Concordia won at home 87-74 on Feb. 1, 2003.
MIAC PLAYOFF HISTORY: Concordia
is making their first appearance in the MIAC tournament since the 2000-01
season. In that year, Concordia entered the playoffs as the #6 seed and
upset St. Thomas in the first round 86-79. The Cobbers went on to fall
in the conference semifinals to St. John's 69-52. This is the Cobbers fifth
appearance in the 20-year history of the MIAC tournament. After their win
over St. Thomas on Tuesday, the Cobbers have a 4-3 overall MIAC playoff
record and a 2-2 mark on the road. Macalester is making just
their second appearance in the MIAC postseason. In 2002, they beat St.
John's 83-82 in the first round before losing to St. Thomas 79-74 in the
semifinals. Their overall MIAC playoff record is 1-1, and 1-0 at home.
