Season Outlook/Notes:
Preview By Don Stoner, Augsburg College Sports Information Coordinator
MINNEAPOLIS (11/2/99) - Last season, Augsburg College's women's basketball team suffered through a case of "close, but not close enough." Five games lost by eight points or less. Significant injuries to key players that forced coach Lauri Ludeman to shuffle the lineup often. An 0-8 start to the season, ending with a 3-22 overall record.
This season, the Auggies hope to change their fortunes, and turn those close losses into victories. With several quality returners, plus a strong recruiting class for Ludeman, entering her fourth year as the Auggies' mentor, the Auggies should be able to move up in the standings in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, considered one of the strongest NCAA Division III women's basketball conferences in the nation.
"We have a great group of returning players, and our new players should have an immediate impact," Ludeman said. "At the end of last season, we were really clicking. We hope to start this season where we ended off last year."
Ludeman said the team, while not blessed with significant height, will need to rely on quickness and aggressive play. Augsburg regularly plays a 10-12-player lineup.
"We will look to pressure teams defensively, both full- and half-court," she said. "We need players to step up and be scorers. In the MIAC, successful teams have three or more players in double figures. We must be consistent."
The Auggies return three starters and several significant reserves from last year's club. Leading the returners is senior post player Adrienne Tietz (Sr., Shakopee, Minn./Monticello HS), who led all scorers last year with 211 points (8.4 per game) and 176 rebounds (7.0 per game). She was one of just three Auggies to see action in all 25 games.
Erin Brockberg (Jr., Pipestone, Minn./Pipestone-Jasper HS), developed into a quality point guard in her first season as a starter. She averaged 3.0 points and 2.2 assists per game last year. Brockberg has become a stronger and quicker player in the off-season, Ludeman noted, which should help her numbers improve.
Liz Meskan (Jr., New Prague, Minn.) suffered through injuries her sophomore year, but was still able to contribute some solid numbers at the shooting forward spot, contributing a 7.1 points and 3.9 rebound per-game average last year.
Rachael Ekholm (So., Richfield, Minn.) shined late in the season, when she became one of the team's top three-point shooting threats. She set a single-game school record by hitting seven 3-pointers in the last game of the season, a narrow 84-78 loss to MIAC contender St. Olaf. Ekholm connected on 30 three-pointers last year and averaged 8.1 points per game. Jaime Kingsley (Jr., Harmony, Minn./Fillmore Central HS) was a quality backup in the post positions, and will move into more of a prominent role this season. Last year, she averaged 4.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.
Two other players, who were primarily junior varsity players last season, have the potential to make significant impacts on the varsity this year, Ludeman noted -- guard Betsy Gessell (So., Crystal, Minn./Robbinsdale Cooper HS) and post player Katie Kolles (Sr., Monticello, Minn.).
Other returning letterwinners who should see significant varsity time include senior guards Colleen Shellum (Sr., Cottage Grove, Minn./Park HS) and Jodi Soule (Sr., Cannon Falls, Minn.), along with sophomore forward Allison Illa (So., Cannon Falls, Minn.).
Ludeman had a strong recruiting campaign, drawing six newcomers into the Auggie program. Key among them will be guard Michelle Anderson (Fr., Owatonna, Minn.), an outside-shooting specialist who was a two-year starter and member of two state tournament teams (1997, 1999) in Owatonna, starter on last year's Class AAA runner-up. Anderson averaged 8.2 points per game for the Huskies last season.
Two junior college players with state tournament experience at Rainy
River Community College (International Falls, Minn.) transfer into the
Augsburg program this year -- junior forwards Jess Hanson (Jr., Blackduck,
Minn.) and Amy Lashinski (Jr., Bowlus, Minn./Upsala HS). Hanson is a strong
post with a good outside shot as well, Ludeman said, while Lashinski, an
all-conference selection, is a solid team leader.
