Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID

Season Outlook/Notes
Peg Moline (1998-99 MIAC Coach of the Year) is excited about returning nine of her top ten players from a squad that finished 18-7 overall and 17-5 in the MIAC last year (4th place).  All-conference guard Sara Schonrock has graduated and her aggressive style of play will be missed, but everyone else returns including the talented senior trio of guard Shelly Bishop, a two-time all-conference selection, center Katie Hansen, a three-year starter and center Nissa Stolp, a two-year starter.  These three players have been regulars on the varsity for the past three years and all are quality MIAC performers.  Other key returners include 6-4 junior Tricia Niebuhr, who gained a great deal of confidence in the second half of last season and will be an intimidating shot blocker this season and Carey Willis, a point guard who stepped right into the starting lineup last season and was selected to the league’s all-first year team by the MIAC coaches.  Moline also returns a solid group of role players that includes junior guard Tricia Loo, junior guard Jessica Hogan, junior forward Nikki Otto and sophomore forward Kristin Johnson. In addition, the team welcomes three quality newcomers in junior transfer Emily Van Hee, a forward, Marnie Stenson, a first-year point guard and Kelly Etzel, a first-year center.

The Gusties strength will be their experience and depth as well as a good balance of talent in the post and on the perimeter.  Hansen, Stolp, Niebuhr and Etzel give Coach Moline great depth in the paint and will allow her to give veterans Hansen and Stolp a breather when necessary.  It also gives the talented newcomer Etzel the chance to learn the ropes from two quality veteran players in Hansen and Stolp. Niebuhr gives the team a true low post who can play with her back to the basket offensively while also being able to intimidate opponents with her shot blocking ability on the defensive end.  On the perimeter, Shelly Bishop is one of the premier guards in the league.  At 5-10, Bishop can play both inside and out and is versatile enough defensively to be able to drop down and defend a post player if necessary.  On the point, the Gusties will be in the capable hands of sophomore Carey Willis.  Willis is a talented ball handler, who can also hit the three-point shot.  Her ability to shoot from the outside really helped open up the post area for the Gusties last year.

Coach Peg Moline has had her squad knocking on the door of MIAC elite for the past couple of years and she is hoping that this year, her deep and talented squad can find the right combination to open the door that leads to the MIAC title.
