Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID
New coach Tricia Dornisch will try to carry on a strong women's basketball tradition at St. Thomas. She proved her head coaching abilities in three seasons as the Toms' head soccer coach. Her soccer teams were 41-15-1 and earned two NCAA playoff berths and three MIAC runner-up finishes.
Dornisch hopes to continue the excellence that former Coach Ted Riverso established. In Riverso's 15-year era, UST compiled a 337-80 record, including a national-best 13 consecutive NCAA playoff berths. The Toms have the second-best record in NCAA Division III in the 1990s (247-37, .870). The Toms were 127-17 the last five seasons with Dornisch as an assistant coach, and she also has two top assistant coaches back -- Ellen Thompson and John Hershey -- to help the transition.
St. Thomas graduated four key players whose four-year era produced a 102-11 record -- 1,000-point scorer Paige Olson plus Tara Miller, Erin Hempel and Sue Schonhoff. UST finished 22-4 last season and lost in the second round of the NCAA playoffs to eventual runner-up St. Ben's. They were 11-1 and had just beaten St. Ben's before losing Hempel to a season-ending foot injury.
With six of their top 10 players back this season, plus three talented newcomers, UST will try to continue their streak of NCAA tourney appearance and push MIAC favorite St. Ben's in the conference race. Seniors Molly Hayden (6-0) and Mary Thomes (5-10) are potent front-line scorers. Soph guard Missy Pedersen is a strong 3-point shooter and penetrator. Juniors Anne Newell, Kelly Halvorson and Amy Ginsburg are experienced role players.
Dornisch's hiring in April gave her a late start on recruiting. Three
newcomers should contribute -- freshman Tish Dusich and soph transfer Jenny
Gonsior in the guard court, and soph Jennifer Ulstad (6-2), a transfer
from Division II North Dakota State, at center.
