Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID
As the 1999-2000 Pipers approach the brink of their millennium season, the word that resounds in Hutton Fieldhouse and comes to mind for players and fans alike is “experience”. With all five starters returning from last season and a sizable contingent of senior veterans that have over 200 starts underneath their belt, the Piper hoopsters look towards this November with a positive and hopeful attitude.
Senior captains Shanna Torgerson and Chanteil Walter will lead the Piper charge again this season. Torgerson, a “no-nonsense, all-gamesense” type of backcourt player, was a frontrunner at the stripe (84% Ft) last year and will contribute at both the one and two spot this season. Walter, an All-MIAC performer who led the conference in both scoring and rebounding last season, will once again be a factor to be dealt with on the block, leading the Piper frontline attack with aggressive rebounding and triggering its exciting, up-tempo offensive game. Senior guard Carrie Forsland-Sund will contribute to the Piper cause in all facets of the game, coming into this season as a three-year starter and bringing a scrappy style of play and defensive intensity to both the point and off guard spots.
Sophomore post Katie Jensen and guard Stacey Thill return this season after excellent first-year outings. Jensen, second in the MIAC in rebounding, will aid Walter in the paint with outstanding defense and a quick first step to the hoop. Thill, whose speed and agility is also an asset to the Piper soccer team, brings athleticism and high “basketball IQ” to the Piper back court. Big things were expected and received from both players last season and such will be the case in 1999-2000.
Newcomers expected to have an impact on the Piper lineup this season
are Sara Wishard, Marti Hendrickson, Kaylan Dirkx and Steph Vaitonis.
Wishard and Hendrickson are both sophomore transfers who understand all
aspects of the college game and bring hustle and poise to the squad.
Dirkx and Vaitonis are first-year players who will not only make
immediate contributions to the lineup but show the kind of talent/attitude
combo that will lead the Pipers in years to come.
