Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID
Two years ago, the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team needed to win one of its remaining two games to give them 10 wins for the season, a mark the Cardinals had not reached since the 1988-89 season.
The Cardinals dropped their final two games, leaving them at 9-13 for the year, and leaving SMU coach Kim Fierke hoping that the 1998-99 campaign would be the Cardinals' year to break that 10-win barrier.
With three games remaining in last year's season, the Cardinals' hopes for 10 wins hinged on the completion of a three-game, season-ending winning streak.
The Cardinals easily cleared hurdles No. 1 and No. 2, beating Bethel 61-54 and Augsburg 70-65. Hurdle No. 3, however, was more like a brick wall, as the Cardinals were no match for Concordia, losing 92-67 to end with a 9-16 record for the second straight season.
"It was a tough way to end the season," admitted Fierke. "But it also worked as a good motivational tool for all of our players. "We've continued to come close (to breaking the 10-win barrier), but we haven't quite gotten there," Fierke continued. "This year, everyone has worked extra-hard in the off-season and we are all pulling together to continue to make that climb up the conference ladder.."
With her entire roster including first-team All-MIAC pick Jenny Long (Westmont, Ill.) and All-First-Year player Amy Burns (Winona, Minn.) returning, it's no wonder the third-year head coach is so excited for the season to start.
"The talent we had last year was far better than the year before, and yet both times we finished with nine wins," Fierke said. "Our problem was we had trouble playing at our best all the time. We had too many lapses where we didn't put our best game on the court.
"For us to be successful in the future, that consistency has to be there
every day."
