The Cobber defense couldn't stop the Gustavus offense, as they amassed 500 yards of total offense en route to a 42-28 victory over Concordia. Running back Andy Traetow led the way for the Gusties, picking up 209 rushing yards on 27 carries and one touchdown, as well as catching 5 passes for 74 yards. Quarterback Joe Thorvig completed 19 of 41 passes, including four touchdown tosses, two to Chris Greavu, and one each to Ryan Hoag and Jeff Pelant. Pelant also scored a rushing touchdown for the Gusties.
Gustavus jumped ahead 14-0 after the first quarter before the Cobbers exploded onto the scoreboard midway through the second quarter. Robert Clark (So., Seeley Lake, Mont.) returned a Gustie punt 67 yards for a touchdown, just minutes after he had returned a punt for 64 yards and was stopped 20 yards short of the goal line. He finished with 2 punt returns for a total of 131 yards, as well as 40 rushing yards on 11 carries. The Cobbers tied the game at 14 with 2:29 left in the first half, when quarterback Ryan Hebrink (So., Sacred Heart, Minn.) dashed in from 21 yards out. Gustavus answered with a 47 second scoring drive, capped by Greavu's first touchdown catch of the game, to end the half with the Gusties leading 21-14. Thorvig and Greavu connected again on the opening drive of the second half, a 48 yard bomb to put Gustavus up by 14 again, at 28-14. The rest of the third quarter was scoreless until Jon Doebler (Sr., Warroad, Minn.) punched in the ball from the one yard line to make the score 28-21 Gustavus going into the fourth quarter. The Gusties put the game away by stopping the Cobbers offense, and adding 14 more points of their own, both on touchdowns by Jeff Pelant, one rushing and one receiving. The Cobbers finished the scoring when Hebrink connected with Jeff Hertel (Sr., Fargo, ND) late in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard touchdown completion.
Concordia falls to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the MIAC, while Gustavus improves to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC. The Cobbers will travel to Hamline next Saturday at 1:00pm.

The Headline:
Cobbers Face Gusties In MIAC Moving Game
The Inside Scoop :
Today' s game features two teams that are 1-1 in league play and looking
to make a push towards the top. The loser of the game will have two losses
and play the rest of the year for spots in the middle of the conference
while the winner will leave their title hopes still intact. The Cobbers
are coming off a 35-12 victory over Macalester in a game that was delayed
by over an hour due to weather conditions. Concordia used their traditionally
strong running game to hammer across five rushing touchdowns and a rejuvenated
defense that held the Scots to only 151 yards of total offense. Two of
the Cobbers' offensive threats are among the league leaders. Joel Ferrie
is fourth in the league in rushing, averaging 77 yards per game on the
ground. Fellow senior Raleigh Schmidt is third in the MIAC in receptions.
In his first two league game he has 13 catches for 192 yards. On
defense the Cobbers are ranked third against the run and seventh versus
the pass. The pass defense will be tested today as Gustavus comes into
the game with the league's second rated passing offense. Quarterback Joe
Thorvig leads the MIAC in passing yards per game, averaging 257 yards per
contest. Expect the ball to be in the air today as Thorvig has attempted
68 passes in the team's first two league games.
History Lesson: Gustavus Leads the Series 39-29-2.
Last year the Gusties won 39-22. The Cobber were held scoreless in
the three of the four quarters, amassing all 22 points in the second quarter.
Trailing 26-22 at halftime the Cobbers allowed two second half touchdowns
to bring the final margin of defeat to 17. Cobber running back Len Crouse
rushed for 109 yards while Gustavus quarterback Joe Thorsvig threw for
287 yards and 3 TD's. The Cobbers have won 7 of the last 9 meetings between
the teams. That includes victories in '94 and '95 by margins of 48 and
42 points, the largest margins of victory in the 78-year series history.
