2001 Concordia Football vs. St. John's Saturday, November 3, 7:30 St. John's - 28 Concordia - 14 The Recap:
Robert Clark led the Cobber rushing attack as he gained 85 yards on 11 carries. Ryan Hebrink ran for 51 yards and threw for 160. Jeff Hertel hauled in six catches for 77 yards. Johnnie quarterback Ryan Keating threw for 392 yards, completing 20 of the 41 passes he attempted. Blake Elliot had seven receptions for 139 yards and two touchdowns. St. John's punter Charlie Carr averaged an impressive 48.2 yards for his five punts. The Cobbers will finish off their season next Friday when they take on Augsburg at 1:00pm in the Metrodome, while St. John's will host Carleton on Saturday at 1:00pm in their last regular season game. |

Concordia is Passed Over by St.
John's 28-14.
Concordia drew first blood, but St. John's countered with 28 straight
points and won a pivotal MIAC game 28-14. The Cobbers (3-5, 4-5) were unable
to shut down the high powered Johnnie (7-1, 7-2) passing attack, allowing
392 yards and four touchdowns through the air.
Concordia opened the scoring in the first quarter when Robert Clark (So., Seeley Lake, Mont.) turned a harmless run into a 35 yard scoring scamper. The Johnnies finally got on the board with 1:08 to go in the period when Keating threw for his first TD, on a 38 yard strike to Drew Gibson.
After the missed extra point St. John's proceeded to rattle off 22 straight points before Concordia brought the game to within 14 with six minutes to go in the final quarter. Cobber quarterback Ryan Hebrink (So, Sacred Heart, Minn.) scrambled in from six yards out for the TD that kept Concordia's hopes for an upset alive.
After a Cobber defensive stop, the offense drove the ball to the Johnnie 10 yard line but turned the ball over on downs when Hebrink's fourth down pass to Jeff Hertel (Sr., Fargo, N.Dak.) fell just yards short. Keating then knelt down to kill the final 31 seconds of the game to bring St. John's to within one game of clinching a share of the title and the automatic NCAA playoff bid.

Cobbers Hope to Derail Johnnies Comeback Train!
The Inside Scoop :
Concordia is trying to derail St. John's comeback train before the
final destination of their eighth MIAC title in the past eleven years.
The Johnnies started the 2001 season by getting knocked down twice. They
lost their season opener 25-10 to UW-Eau Claire and then their MIAC opener
31-28 to St. Olaf. Since then they have won six straight and need two more
wins to gain at least a share of the MIAC title and also the automatic
berth into the NCAA playoffs. That is because they hold the tiebreaker
over both Bethel and St. Thomas. St. John's blanked Bethel last week 34-0
and they downed St. Thomas 27-21 earlier in the season. The Cobbers are
looking to finish with a winning record in the MIAC and hopefully a top
half finish. Concordia has equaled last year's win total of four. That
was done with a strong defensive showing against Carleton last week. The
Cobbers shut out the Knights 35-0, garnering their first shutout since
October 30th of 1999 when they blanked Macalester 40-0. Tonight's game
will be a battle of philosophies. The Cobbers lead the league in rushing
yards per game (255.4 ypg) while the Johnnies are second in passing offense
(259.3 ypg). Concordia runs the ball an average of 51 times per game while
St. John's is averaging 31 throws per contest. St. John's boasts the league's
most efficient QB in Ryan Keating. Keating has a completion rate of 62%.
Concordia has two of the top six runners in the conference. Ryan Hebrink
is fifth in the MIAC with 527 yards on the ground, while Joel Ferrie is
sixth with 483 total rushing yards.
History Lesson: St. John’s Leads the Series 33-26-7.
Last season St. John’s scored 28 second quarter points to bolt to a
28-0 halftime lead, on their way to a 35-14 victory over the Cobbers. The
Cobbers’ last victory over the Johnnies was in 1990 when they won
a 30-28 decision in the Metrodome. The two teams battled to a tie twice
in the 90s, but St. John’s has won the last five meetings.
