Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID Don Stoner

MINNEAPOLIS (10/25/99) - Last year, the Augsburg College men's hockey team entered the final weekend of the regular season with a chance to win the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship for the second year in a row. But four straight losses to St. Thomas -- two in the regular season finale and two in the MIAC playoff semifinals -- ended the Auggies' season and its quest for back-to-back MIAC titles with a disappointing 11-12-4 record.

This year, Augsburg does not intend to disappoint again.

With a solid goaltender and a deep lineup on both the forward and defensive lines, the Auggies have the confidence to improve upon last year's fourth-place conference finish, said head coach Mike Schwartz, entering his fourth season behind the Auggie bench.

"We definitely have the ability to contend," said Schwartz, whose Auggies finished 8-5-3 in conference play last season. "Last year, we had a chance, but we faltered late in the season. This year, we have the ability to prove it on the rink week in and week out."

Having one of the best goaltenders in the nation in Division III hockey, Ryan McIntosh (Jr., Calgary, Alberta/Bishop Grandin HS), will be a strong foundation for the Auggies to build. A second-team All-American his freshman campaign, he repeated All-MIAC honors his sophomore season with a solid .905 save percentage and 3.15 goals-against-average.

"I don't think there's any question that Ryan McIntosh is the premier goalie in the MIAC, which gives us a solid foundation from the goalie out," Schwartz said. "But I don't think Ryan has reached his full potential yet. As dominating as he's been, he has the chance to be an outstanding pro prospect if he wants to continue. But he has areas to improve on. There's some room for improvement."

Augsburg's forward lines will have to overcome the loss of four seniors, including top scorer Martin Hlinka, now a professional player with the minor league United Hockey Association's Quad City Mallards. Hlinka's 33 points (six goals, 27 assists) will be missed, along with the 21 points (9 goals, 12 assists) of Mario LeBlanc and the 20 points (seven goals, 13 assists) of Trevor Tallackson.

But there is a solid corps of young players ready to make their mark on the Auggie forward lines, including All-MIAC returner Steve LaMere (Sr., Apple Valley, Minn.), Augsburg's leading goal scorer (13 goals) last year. Roland Blumer (Sr., Anchorage, Alaska/Robert Service HS) also returns for his senior season, after scoring 14 points (six goals, eight assists) last year. Joe Johnson (So., Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS) had an outstanding freshman year, with 17 points (eight goals, nine assists), and will be counted on to keep up the offensive intensity this season. Nicholas Murray (So., Bloomington, Minn./Holy Angels HS) suffered through injuries last year and could only play in 17 games, but is looking like a solid forward this year, Schwartz said.

Other key forward returners include Mike Jackson (Jr., Ramsey, Minn./Elk River HS), Jeffrey Arndt (Jr., Hugo, Minn./Forest Lake HS), Andy Ness (Jr., North St. Paul, Minn./Forest Lake HS), Tony Putt (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) and Joe Marston (Sr., Minnetonka, Minn./Apple Valley HS).

Three newcomers could also make an immediate impact at the forward positions -- Brad "Whitey" Schwartzbauer (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.), who returns to college after spending several years in minor league baseball in the Colorado Rockies organization; Jaroslav Cesky (Fr., Praha, Czech Republic) and Billy Flikeid (Fr., Lakeville, Minn./St. Thomas Academy).

On defense, the Auggies will be led by All-MIAC honorable mention selection Andrew Shermoen (Jr., International Falls, Minn.), who had 11 points (two goals, nine assists) last year; and Chris McLeod (Sr., Phoenix, Ariz./Sunnyslope HS), who had 13 points (six goals, seven assists). David Olson (Sr., Roseville, Minn.) and Kris Arro (Sr., Etobicoke, Ont./Scarlett Heights Collegiate HS) also return on defense.

Key newcomers on defense include Chad Moore (Fr., Lakeville, Minn.), Henric Lindgren (Fr., Gnesta, Sweden/St. Paul Academy) and Brad Holzinger (Fr., North Oaks, Minn./Hill-Murray HS).

This season, Augsburg and the rest of the MIAC will take part in a new schedule. The MIAC's Thanksgiving tournament has been discontinued, in favor of an interlocking nonconference schedule between the MIAC and Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA), the other Midwestern men's hockey league. Augsburg will face NCHA schools Wisconsin-Superior, Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Wisconsin-River Falls, Lake Forest and St. Norbert in nonconference games that should give the Auggies a good sense of where they stand, Schwartz said.

The Auggies will also host a top Norwegian club team, Vallerenga, in an exhibition game Dec. 18. Vallerenga will also face Division I WCHA schools Wisconsin and Minnesota before facing the Auggies as part of a three-game tour of the United States in December.
