Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID
If Saint Mary¹s University men¹s hockey coach Don Olson had his way, the Y2K bug could strike right now -and wipe out all memory of last year.
For the second straight year, the Cardinals found themselves on the outside looking in as the conference's top four teams took part in the MIAC's post-season tournament.
And it¹s a memory Olson certainly wouldn't mind having wiped from his memory bank.
"Last year was disappointing," admitted Olson, whose team officially finished the conference season tied with Augsburg for the fourth and final playoff spot, but lost the tiebreaker to the Auggies (SMU lost and tied Augsburg in their two regular-season meetings). "When you start every year, your goal is to win the conference, get into the playoffs and take a run at the NCAA tournament.
"To put in the kind of time and effort that we did, it's frustrating to not be among those teams still playing in early March."
If nothing else, however, Olson is hoping that last year¹s absence from post-season play will motivate this year¹s squad to make sure to write a different ending to their season ‹ an ending that includes the Cardinals' first NCAA playoff appearance since the 1994-95 season.
"You can tell that everyone has worked very hard in the off-season and they are eager to get the season started,² said Olson, whose team kicks off its season with a conference series against Gustavus Nov. 5-6. "I think there are a number of people who are using our absence from the post-season the last two years as motivation. We¹ve got a number of seniors who got a taste of (the MIAC playoffs) as freshmen and haven¹t experienced it again since. "We don't want to be left on the outside looking in this year."
With five of their top eight scorers and two of their top two goaltenders back, it's no wonder the Cardinals are eager to begin erasing old memories. Denny O'Connor (Roseville, Minn.) (13 goals, 21 assists), Kevin Mackey (Palos HIlls, Ill.) (14 goals, 18 assists) and Ryan Stinson (Winona, Minn.) (10 goals, 13 assists) lead a Cardinal offense that promises to be deeper than in recent years, while Fred Hennen (White Bear Lake, Minn.) (7-7-3, 472 saves, .896 save %, 3.32 GAA) returns after starting in 17 of SMU¹s 25 games in goal.
"We lost some talented people (to graduation), and we are going to need some of our younger players to step up and make a bigger contribution," explained Olson, who will be without the services of graduated seniors Randy Gallatin and Jason Sato, who combined to score 21 goals and net 51 points a year ago. "The conference keeps getting tougher and tougher every year. Just look at last year -seven teams were still battling for the four playoff spots right down to the final weekend.
"I think the team that we put on the ice (against Gustavus) will be an improved team over a year ago," Olson added. "There¹s a lot talent - a lot of potential - but team chemistry and our attitude will ultimately determine the level of success we can reach."
Whether or not the Cardinals can turn potential into a return trip to the MIAC playoffs, however, remains to be seen.³You can tell that everyone has worked very hard in the off-season and they are eager to get the season started," said Olson.
