Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID Gene McGivern

1999-2000 University of  St. Thomas Men's Hockey Preview

If experience is any indication, then the 1999-2000 St. Thomas men's hockey team should be ready to go from the outset. Good thing, too. The Tommies will face the team they eliminated in the conference tournament semifinals -- Augsburg -- in the season-opening series.

"I've never had a team with this much experience," says UST coach Terry Skrypek, who begins his 13th season at the Tommies' helm. "We're going to need it. This might be the toughest schedule we have encountered."

16 regulars -- including top scorers Steve Aronson and Brian Bolf --- come back from last year's 16-12-3 team that lost in the NCAA Division III quarterfinals at Wisconsin-Superior.

That Tommies went 7-1-2 in their last 10 games to win the conference championship for the  ninth time in 11 seasons.

"We should have a good team in all areas of the game," Skrypek said. "But you still have to perform on the ice. It's nice to know that we have so many guys who have played in a NCAA tournament."

Aronson, a right wing, (SR-Minnetonka) scored a team-high 26 goals and 36 assists last season, leads the offensive returnees. A two-time All-American and a standout on the Toms' 1999 NCAA runner-up baseball team, Aronson will make a run 200 career points and Division III Player of the Year honors if he stays healthy. He comes into 1999-200 with 153 career points, 10th on the UST career list.

Bolf (SR-Hibbing), who centered Aronson for most of the season, registered 20 goals and 30 assists and led the team in shorthanded goals. Other top guns returning include : Andy Disch (SR-New Brighton/Totino-Grace), who scored 15 times last year; Brad Bonine (JR-Apple Valley/Rosemount), Ryan Francis (SR-Shoreview/Mounds View) and Dan Pavel (SO-North St. Paul), who scored eight each.

Five newcomers expected to add spark to the offense are transfers Eric Wenkes (SO-Eden Prairie), who played at Bemidji State, and Tony Lawrence (SO-White Bear Lake), who played at Air Force Academy; plus freshmen Collin Nash (Rochester Mayo), Gabe Hilmoe (Anoka) and Nick Husting (Hastings)

Ryan Hartung, who's now playing with Toledo of the East Coast Hockey League, and Jay Barry were starting defensemen who graduated. But five regulars return on defense, led by Mike McMahon (JR-Bloomington//Jefferson). "He really stepped up last year in the playoffs," Skrypek said. "He's a real leader on and off the ice." Peter McDonald (SR-East Grand Forks), Luke Volk (JR-Brooklyn Park/Robbinsdale Cooper) and Brad Walz (JR-Bloomington/Kennedy) all saw regular duty last year and return.

Transfers Brian Waldo (JR-Cottage Grove/Park) of Colorado College and Dan Starkey (JR-Bloomington) and freshmen Brian Skrypek (Roseville) and Andy Palmgren (Blaine) add depth on defense.

Tavis Gillard (SR-Rosemount) collared most of the load last year in goal and returns for another year. He is expected to be challenged for the starting job by Brad Moore (FR-Lakeville), who played for the St. Paul Vulcans of the USHL last year as well as returnees Jason Rysdon (SR-Sioux Falls, S.D.) and Mat Gershater (SO-Ketchum, ID).

The 1999-2000 schedule includes crossover games with members of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association. The Tommies' non-conference schedule includes games against perennial powers UW-River Falls and St. Norbert's from the rival loop a s well as eastern power Williams College. "There will be no `easy' games this year," Skyrpek said.

Only the winner of the MIAC post-season tournament is guaranteed a bid in the NCAA Division III tournament.
