Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID, by Scott King, St. Olaf SID
NORTHFIELD, Minn. -- One sure sign of a team on the rise is a head coach's willingness to put together a nonconference schedule that challenges his players.
Sean Goldsworthy, entering his third year in charge of the St. Olaf College hockey program, certainly has offered that challenge to his 1999-2000 Oles, who open the season Nov. 5-6 with a home-and-home series against Saint John's. Goldsworthy has upgraded the Oles' nonconference schedule, and certainly no cupcake opponents were allowed. It is Goldsworthy's hope that the tough out-of-conference slate and the return of 22 lettermen will have the Oles prepared for the grind of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season.
"If people want to see good hockey this winter, all they need to do is swing by the rink (Northfield Ice Arena, aka 'The Structure') this winter," said Goldsworthy, 13-34-3 in his first two seasons on The Hill. "At home we play St. Norbert's, River Falls and St. Thomas, all teams ranked in the top 10 in Division III, and we also play Superior on the road, a team that was the national runner-up last year. We've really stepped up our competition outside of the league."
The Oles return all but one player, defenseman Scott Macho, who will serve as one of Goldsworthy's assistants this winter. With Macho's departure, the defensive corps will be headed up by junior co-captain Jason Haider (Lino Lakes, Minn.), an All-MIAC performer last season.
"We have a lot coming back, but we do have to fill Scott's spot on defense," Goldsworthy said. "He gave us a lot of ice time, about 26 to 28 minutes per game. We have enough returnees to fill the spot, but it won't be easy. Hopefully, Jason will step up."
Goldsworthy has a lot of confidence in his No. 1 goaltender, senior PT Haider (Lino Lakes, Minn.). Without hesitation, Goldsworthy lists goaltending as one of St. Olaf's primary strengths.
"I expect us to be pretty solid defensively, and that starts with the goaltending," Goldsworthy said. "PT is definitely talented enough to be a first-team All-MIAC goalie. He's been honorable mention the last two years. He has played tough when we haven't had the best support in front of him."
Though the Oles are still a relatively young team, the returning players have logged plenty of ice time. The team has depth at forward, including juniors Tim Legreid (Moorhead, Minn.) and Jeff Simison (Moorhead, Minn.), but Goldsworthy said it is imperative for the Oles to develop at least a couple players to look to when the team needs a clutch goal late in a tight game.
"Goal production is one of my biggest concerns," Goldsworthy said. "We have a lot of good players, but we need some guys to step up and produce on the offensive end. "We have seven junior forwards. Somebody has to bust out of that group and develop into go-to guys."
It appears St. Olaf has the players in place to improve its position in the MIAC pecking order. Along with the returnees, the Oles boast a strong recruiting class that includes forward Jason BreMiller (Millbrook, N.Y.), goalie Jake Bullard (Bloomington, Minn.), forward Nick Hanson (Eden Prairie, Minn.), defenseman Brian Meyer (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and defenseman Ryan Sisson (Eagan, Minn.).
"We're looking to make the next step into the upper echelon of the league," said Goldsworthy, whose Oles finished 3-12-1 and in eighth place in the MIAC last season. "Most of my players have two years under my system. I thought we became competitive in the MIAC last year. This year we need to get over that hill and turn the corner."
Turning the corner means competing with -- and beating -- the best teams in the conference, the likes of St. Thomas, Saint John's and Concordia. Do that and the Oles likely will find themselves in the thick of the MIAC playoff chase (the top four teams qualify for the MIAC playoffs).
"The MIAC is a very intense, competitive league with a lot of parity," Goldsworthy said. "There's not much difference between the No. 1 and No. 5 teams.
"This year we have more experience.
Our hope is kids will to develop into solid MIAC players. We don't just
want to be competitive. We want to win some games and definitely be a playoff
contender."
