After a 98-99 season in which the Cobbers finished third in the MIAC and advanced to the finals of the MIAC hockey play-offs, the '99-00 Cobbers are optimistic about the upcoming season. With the loss of only four players to graduation coach Baumgartner has a good deal of experience returning.

The Cobbers hope to continue last season's stingy defensive style of play, making teams work for everything they get. All-MIAC goalie Bryan Howard (five shutouts in 98-99, league leading 2.25 gaa) returns in the nets for Concordia. He'll be bolstered by what could be one of the the best defensive groups in the MIAC.

The defense returns its top four players, led by Rob Gramer (two time All-MIAC). Also back on the blueline are veterans Bryan Knutson, Kori Pearson and Guy Clairmont. Incoming freshman Shawn Rehm and transfer Jeremy Tandeski appear to have the inside track on the remaining two starting spots but freshman Andy Crook, Jeff Styba, and Matt McWaters will keep the competition keen as all will try to crack the starting line-up.

Losing leading scorer Brock Blikre and defensive forward Paul Thacker from the offense causes some concern.  But coach Steve Baumgartner thinks the Cobbers may actually be improved up front. Baumgartner notes, "You hope that some of the guys from last season that were on the third, fourth and fifth lines will pick-up the slack and play hard for a spot in the starting line-up. It is their time to step forward."

Newcomer Brian Nelson (USHL) is expected to give the Cobbers a steady goal scorer. Others, such as Antonio Castaneda, Treavor Peterson, and Jack Steen, will help a strong returning cast up front, led by All-MIAC junior forward Mike Gast and senior Ken Putt.

"We have to find the right combination of lines and get into our systems early so that we are ready to go when the season starts. That means finding a guy for Gast and Jason DiMatteo, for Putt and Brady Burgess, and for Mark Schiller and Brent Kuehne. These lines may well take on a whole new look as camp goes along." said Baumgartner.

The coaching staff is excited about this year's squad. With the interlocking schedule with the NCHA, fans of the Cobbers may be in for one of the most exciting seasons in Concordia history. The Cobbers will play six games with the NCHA

Concordia opens its season November 5-6 at Hamline and then hosts St. Mary's Nov. 11-12.
