Season Outlook/Notes:
by School's SID, Michael Hemmesch

A new season has arrived and the Saint John's hockey team is coming off a successful 1998-99 campaign finishing 10-4-2 in the MIAC and 13-12-2 overall. SJU finished second in the MIAC regular season standings and lost to Concordia-Moorhead in the MIAC playoff semifinal series.

This year's squad will have a much different look than the experienced team of last season, returning only seven of its top fourteen players. Former U.S. Hocky Olympian and SJU's winningest all-time head hockey coach, John Harrington, will look to replace eight seniors lost from last year's roster, including former All-America selection Matt Erredge. The loss of Erredge, Saint John's all-time leader in goals (91), assists (80) and points (171), will create a large void in the Johnnies' offense. To fill that void, Harrington will turn to seniors Steve Aldrich, Woodbury, and Mike Feiro, Germantown, Wis., to lead the Johnnies into the new millenium. Aldrich was second on the team in total points last year with 13 goals and 20 assists. Feiro recorded 11 total points with four goals and seven assists. Two other key forwards, juniors Mike Zasada, Cottage Grove, and Adam Briggle, Colorado Springs, Colo., also return on offense for the Johnnies.

Defensively, Saint John's will count on junior Matt Thompson (St. Louis Park) and sophomore Chad Helmer (Eden Prairie) to shore up a Johnnie defense that returns only three of its top six players.

This season will be a true test for the young Johnnies as the MIAC this year will introduce a new type of schedule. The interlocking schedule with the NCHA will provide the Johnnies the opportunity to compete against some of the top competition in the nation.
